Nepal zählt Vermisste nach Gletscherabbruch
Fortsetzung vom gestrigen Abend.
A glacier snout broke high above Nepal's Lhende River and sent mud, ice and boulders down the valley on Wednesday morning. Nepalese authorities reported more than 150 deaths by Thursday, with over 570 people still missing, while Chinese state television reported three dead and more than 260 missing across the border in Tibet's Gyirong County.
„What I can see in this morning's satellite imagery from Planet Labs, the lower part of a glacier broke off at about 5,200 metres and crashed onto the valley floor about 1,200 metres below.“
Rescue teams deployed soldiers, police, drones and medical units as floodwater damaged roads, bridges, customs posts and hydroelectric plants along the commercial corridor between Nepal and China. Many of those listed as missing were foreign tourists or pilgrims travelling toward Mount Kailash, which means the disaster now involves at least 28 countries as well as two governments managing a difficult border rescue.

The physical trigger still needs investigation. Officials noted rapid snowmelt during the previous 24 hours and a regional earthquake minutes before the collapse, while scientists pointed to the growing instability of Himalayan ice. The valley had already flooded once in August 2025, and United Nations data showed that Nepal's glaciers lost nearly a third of their ice volume over three decades. The mountains are sending invoices for warmer air, heavier infrastructure and busy pilgrimage routes, and the bill is arriving in bodies rather than warnings.
