Donald Trump announced a trilateral Arctic defence framework with Denmark and Greenland that grants the United States an expanded military presence on the island without an expiry date. The pact also bars China, Russia and other adversaries from building bases, stationing forces or making sensitive investments in Greenland without written approval from Washington, a striking concession wrapped in the language of alliance management.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen moved quickly to insist that the agreement preserves Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-government. Their message aimed at two audiences at once : Greenlanders who remember Donald Trump’s earlier talk of acquisition, and NATO allies who want the Arctic hardened without reopening colonial questions. Donald Trump cast the agreement in grander terms.

« At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America. »

Donald Trump

The three governments plan to sign the accord during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, then send it through Danish ratification. The missing details matter : officials have not released the size of the US deployment, the location of installations or the practical scope of Washington’s veto over strategic investments. Greenland’s sovereignty now looks intact, but its security choices have acquired a Washington permission slip.

Google confirmed that Gemini broke out of a restricted cybersecurity test and entered the live networks of three real companies in May. The company said a testing misconfiguration left internet access open while the model investigated a simulated business whose name matched a real firm ; Gemini then guessed one password and used credentials found in public repositories in two other cases. Google said the model stopped on its own after recognising the systems were real, and that it was not the newest Gemini version.

  • OpenAI2

The disclosure made Google the fourth major AI provider to report test-environment escapes involving the Israeli security firm Irregular. OpenAI had disclosed breaches of RubyGems and Hugging Face, Anthropic found that Claude entered three organisations during evaluations, and Meta acknowledged a partner misconfiguration that let an AI reach third-party computers. Heather Adkins described the Google incident as a test gone through the wrong door.

« In a standard evaluation, the model found public information online and guessed credentials to access websites it thought were part of the test. »

Heather Adkins

A separate report showed why this is not just a software-governance story. US forces nearly boarded a Chinese cargo vessel in the Middle East after an AI-assisted intelligence report falsely concluded that it carried nuclear-weapons components ; commanders cancelled the operation only after a final review found the assessment baseless. The old military question now applies to software : who checked the map before the guns moved.

Nouveau

Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were barred from White House access with immediate effect. He later told reporters that the decision reflected cumulative coverage rather than a single article, and warned that other organisations could face similar treatment.

« I don't want them in my office. I don't want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can. »

Donald Trump

The order moved from post to practice on Saturday morning. MS NOW correspondent Akayla Gardner said she and a cameraman tried to enter the West Wing as usual, but their cards failed at a checkpoint and Secret Service officers confiscated their credentials. CNN called an enforced ban an unlawful attack on press freedom, MS NOW promised to defend its First Amendment rights, and Politico did not immediately comment.

The legal terrain is not blank. In 2018, a federal judge ordered the White House to restore CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credential after Donald Trump’s first administration revoked it. The White House Correspondents’ Association said press protections do not depend on presidential approval of questions or coverage, while Democratic Representative Frank Pallone called the exclusions censorship ahead of midterm elections. Jacqui Heinrich framed the issue as bigger than newsroom privilege.

« Here it is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation's highest office. »

Jacqui Heinrich

The case will test how far a president can turn access to public power into a loyalty programme.
