Iranians rally in Tehran volunteer drive following threats from Donald Trump

Mass mobilization in Tehran

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered in central Tehran on Friday in a state-organized demonstration to pledge readiness to take up arms. The mobilization followed months of conflict since the United States and Israel launched attacks on 28 February. Marchers dressed in combat uniforms and carried national flags through the city center as onlookers cheered, while some participants trampled American and Israeli flags and chanted slogans against both nations. Iranian state media had encouraged citizens for several days to join the Janfaday-e Iran campaign, which translates to those who sacrifice their lives for Iran, announcing that weapons training with assault rifles would begin shortly. The demonstration represents the largest public gathering in the country since the military conflict began in February.

Volunteer recruitment and official rhetoric

The volunteer initiative is designed to serve as an auxiliary security force alongside the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Basij militia. General Hassan Hassanzadeh, chief of the Revolutionary Guard in Tehran, stated on state television that more than 600,000 citizens had registered for the program, with overall participation expected to exceed one million. State media estimated that over 300,000 people took to the streets during the Friday morning event. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior military commanders observed the demonstration from viewing stands. Hossein Taeb, the newly appointed head of the Basij, declared in an opening address that the volunteers would prepare for complete defense and form a nightmare for the country's adversaries, adding that similar mobilization rallies would convene in other cities.

US warnings and Gulf maritime attacks

The demonstration in Tehran occurred one day after US President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that he was considering direct military escalations against Tehran. The military rally took place against a backdrop of severe economic strain caused by a US naval blockade of Iranian ports and newly expanded economic sanctions. On the morning of the rally, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that an unidentified projectile struck a commercial oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities also claimed an attack against a tanker in the vital waterway, where Iranian military units have asserted control and disrupted Gulf shipments of oil and natural gas.

Military displays and nuclear site reconstruction

During the march through Tehran, the Revolutionary Guard displayed antiaircraft batteries, truck-mounted machine guns, and aerial drones previously deployed in Persian Gulf operations. Outside the capital, satellite imagery from 13 September revealed rapid rebuilding at the Taleghan 2 facility inside the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran. Analysis by the Institute for Science and International Security, led by former UN inspector David Albright, recorded bulldozers, cranes, concrete mixers, dump trucks, and concrete pumps active across the location. Iranian personnel placed a large tarpaulin over the underground site to obscure construction from aerial surveillance and built new concrete blast reinforcements following past destruction by Israeli bunker-busting bombs. The wartime mobilization also follows a United Nations report issued earlier in the week accusing Iranian authorities of crimes against humanity during the suppression of anti-government protests earlier this year.
