Poland enterprise wage growth slows to 5.6% in August 2026, trailing forecasts
Average gross wages in Poland's enterprise sector reached 9,259.54 PLN in August 2026, rising 5.6% annually and missing the 6.6% market forecast as employment fell 0.8%.
Below expectations across the enterprise sector
Statistics Poland (GUS) released labor market data on Monday morning, revealing that the average gross monthly wage in the enterprise sector grew by 5.6% year-on-year in August 2026 to reach 9,259.54 PLN. The reading fell short of macroeconomic forecasts, as the consensus compiled by PAP Biznes and a survey of nearly 20 analyst teams conducted by Rzeczpospolita and Parkiet had projected a 6.6% annual increase. None of the surveyed institutions anticipated a figure as low as 5.6%. In nominal terms, the monthly average increased by approximately 490 PLN compared to August 2025. In parallel, enterprise sector employment decreased by 0.8% year-on-year, precisely matching the consensus forecast. The enterprise sector data encompasses companies with 10 or more employees on employment contracts, representing roughly 40% of all employed workers in the Polish economy.

Seasonal drop and reversal of July bonus spikes
The August wage figure followed a 6.8% year-on-year increase in July 2026, which had marked the fastest pace of growth in the year. The deceleration between July and August is a regular seasonal occurrence in Polish industry, but the 2.6% month-on-month decline was among the steepest monthly drops observed in over a decade. In absolute figures, the average gross wage decreased from 9,509 PLN in July, remaining below the all-time peak of 9,583 PLN set in March 2026. Statistics Poland attributed the month-on-month reduction to a reduced volume of discretionary payments, including annual and quarterly bonuses, jubilee bonuses, and retirement severance packages, after mining and energy companies distributed substantial bonuses during July. The 5.6% annual reading returned wage growth to the corridor observed in the second quarter of 2026, when annual dynamics hovered between 5.4% and 5.9%.

Real wage growth and monetary policy implications
With consumer price index inflation accelerating to 3.4% year-on-year in August due to rising crude oil and fuel costs, real wage expansion decelerated. Calculations published across market reports diverged slightly: Rzeczpospolita noted that real earnings grew by approximately 2.1% year-on-year, tying April 2026 for the lowest real increase in three years, while Business Insider calculated real growth at roughly 3.0%. Despite the cooling pace, August marked the 36th consecutive month of positive real wage growth in Poland, down from the 25-year record of roughly 10% seen in March 2024. For the Monetary Policy Council, the slowdown indicates subdued labor market cost pressures.
Wage pressure remains limited, and the main risk factor for inflation is an external energy shock.
Macroeconomic analysts noted that recent data points toward a stabilization of baseline wage growth around 6.0% year-on-year, though persistently lower real gains may curb consumer spending over time.
