Russia strikes Kyiv as envoys chase a fragile pause
New
A Russian drone struck the Security Service of Ukraine headquarters on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, across from the UNESCO-listed Saint Sophia Cathedral complex. Ukrainian officials said the drone hit the office area of acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad, who was not there, and Kyiv authorities reported nine injuries in the surrounding district. The daylight strike stood out because central government buildings in Kyiv have rarely taken direct damage during more than four years of war.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered a response after speaking with Poklad, but also offered to suspend Ukrainian drone and aerial strikes inside Russia during a visit by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The two are due to travel first to Moscow and then Kyiv with a proposal from Donald Trump, while Ukraine said it expected Russia to pause strikes reciprocally during the talks. Russia's defence ministry, meanwhile, said its forces struck vessels near Chornomorsk and Odesa, and combat continued elsewhere along the front.
“From our side there will be no air strikes and Russia must also guarantee, in a reciprocal manner, a pause in air strikes for all the time necessary for the talks to take place and for handling the logistical issues related to this American visit.”
The strike compresses the diplomatic timetable into a harsher test: if negotiators cannot secure silence for their own journey, a wider ceasefire will look like paper laid over shrapnel.
