Russia pounds Kyiv and pulls NATO borders into the night
New
Russian forces launched a nine-hour overnight barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, killing 16 people and wounding more than 40, according to Ukrainian emergency authorities. Strikes hit apartment blocks, schools and warehouses in Kyiv, while the Russian Defence Ministry claimed it targeted military depots, logistics facilities and drone-component workshops. Ukrainian officials also reported damage in Odesa and Chernihiv, and Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko announced a day of mourning for Friday.
Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had prepared the operation to maximise damage to civilian infrastructure.
“It was a massive attack: the Russians had been preparing it for a long time and combined different types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones to inflict the greatest possible damage on civilian infrastructure.”
The barrage pushed the war toward NATO airspace again. Poland mobilised aircraft and put ground-based air defences on alert, while Romania deployed Spanish fighters and a military helicopter after radar tracked targets near its border. Romanian officials said an uncrewed aerial vehicle entered national airspace near Galati and fell in an unpopulated area, and the defence minister said an F-16 intercepted an explosive sea drone near the Neptun Deep gas platform. Russian officials, meanwhile, reported Ukrainian drone activity toward Moscow and said air defences intercepted 28 drones in the Moscow region.
The bombardment turns air defence from a Ukrainian battlefield need into a NATO border-management problem, which is exactly where a long war becomes harder to contain.
