Aston Villa claim 3-2 victory at Tottenham as Manzambi, Jackson and Buendia score

First-half breakthrough amid defensive absence

Tottenham ended their season-long league goal drought in the 87th minute when Kudus pulled the ball back for substitute Conor Gallagher, whose shot deflected in off Matty Cash. Van Hecke added a second goal for Tottenham deep in stoppage time by heading in a free kick from Robertson, but the final whistle brought boos from the remaining home supporters. The defeat leaves Tottenham in the Premier League relegation zone with two points from five matches heading into the international break, while Aston Villa climbed to 15th place on four points. De Zerbi expressed frustration with his squad's lack of composure after conceding the second goal despite prior tactical preparation.

“I am very disappointed, sad and frustrated for the performance. We can't lose the game in this way, we can't concede the second goal, we can't lose balance just because we are losing.”

De Zerbi noted that his squad held tactical meetings regarding Villa's 86% increase in long balls this season compared to last season. Tottenham also lost right-back Pedro Porro to an injury that led Spain manager Luis de la Fuente to withdraw him from the upcoming national team squad.
