Manzambi's header settles a tight match
Johan Manzambi headed in the only goal at St James' Park in the 36th minute, meeting a cross from João Gomes to give Aston Villa a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday, 17 October, in matchday 7 of the Premier League. The 21-year-old Swiss midfielder came close to joining Newcastle in the summer before moving to Villa, and he now has three goals for his new club. Three days earlier, on Wednesday, 14 October, he was among the scorers in Villa's 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahce. Newcastle barely threatened before the break and failed to register a shot on target, and the home fans booed them off at half-time.
Newcastle's start worries supporters
Newcastle, now coached by Matthias Jaissle after the departure of Eddie Howe, have lost three of their four league matches and conceded 10 goals in that spell. The defeat means they have conceded in 16 successive home games, an unwanted club record. Dan Burn started as a makeshift striker for the second match in a row, and Newcastle again struggled to create chances at the other end. Both clubs now have eight points, with Newcastle 11th ahead of Villa on goals scored. The boos at the final whistle reflected the mood at the ground.
Botman's challenge sparks a red card debate
Sven Botman was only booked for a challenge on Nicolas Jackson in the 18th minute, and Villa felt it should have earned a red card. Sky Sports pundits Shay Given and Jamie Redknapp were also convinced it was a red card offence, with Given saying Botman had been fortunate to stay on the pitch. Redknapp called the challenge dangerous. Manzambi's goal came after he jumped clear of a static Newcastle defence to meet the cross.
Martinez injured as Chelsea beat Everton 2-0
Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 in the same round, but the game was overshadowed by an injury to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, 34. He collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the 65th minute after a free kick, with one report putting the moment in the 66th minute. Martinez lay motionless while medical staff attended him for about ten minutes before he was taken off on a stretcher. Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said after the match that, to his knowledge, Martinez had left the stadium conscious and was in hospital for precautionary examinations. Mike Penders replaced him for the rest of the match.
Manzambi leaves with a calf problem
Manzambi was substituted in the 72nd minute and replaced by Ibrahim Mbaye, after appearing to be affected in his calf. It is not yet clear whether it was a cramp or a more serious problem, and details have not been released. The Swiss international has three goals and three assists in four starts for Villa. Villa host league leaders Manchester City next. Elsewhere on the matchday, Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2 with two Erling Haaland goals, his seventh and eighth of the season, and Liverpool came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at Brentford.
