Zagłębie Lubin open season with 2-0 win over Piast Gliwice, substitute Sypek shines

First half stalemate

Both sides struggled to create clear chances in a tight opening period at Stadion Zagłębia. Piast enjoyed more possession and fired ten shots before the break, but only two tested goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerović, returning to the Ekstraklasa after two years away. Zagłębie’s best opportunity fell to Marcel Reguła, whose acrobatic overhead kick sailed just over the crossbar, while Jakub Łabojko’s close-range effort for the visitors was comfortably gathered.

Ojrzyński’s halftime changes pay off

Head coach Leszek Ojrzyński reacted to the laboured attacking display by making a triple substitution at the interval, sending on Levente Szabó, Jakub Kolan and Jakub Sypek. The move initially failed to shift the momentum, but the fresh legs eventually told as the half wore on.

We needed something different — the first half wasn’t good enough and the changes gave us energy.

Sypek strikes, Reguła seals it

The breakthrough arrived in the 72nd minute. Mateusz Grzybek burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross that Szabó narrowly missed, but the ball rolled to Sypek at the far post for a simple tap-in. Fourteen minutes later Sypek turned provider, curling a cross from the left that Reguła headed in off the underside of the bar to make it 2-0.

Table impact

Zagłębie were the only team in the opening round to score more than once and to keep a clean sheet, lifting them above the pack on goal difference. Piast, by contrast, slumped to the bottom after failing to register a single shot on target in the second half.
