Vehicle rollover at Mount Bundey range
A 28-year-old Australian Army soldier died and five others were injured on Monday, 5 October 2026, during a military training exercise in the Northern Territory. The incident occurred at the Mount Bundey Training Area, a military facility located between 100 and 130 kilometres southeast of Darwin. Australian and allied military units regularly use the Mount Bundey range for exercises involving live ammunition. According to incident reports, the accident occurred when a Supacat high-mobility transporter vehicle overturned while operating on the range grounds. Northern Territory police units were alerted to the rollover and responded to the facility at approximately 4:20 pm local time on Monday afternoon.
Medical evacuation to Royal Darwin Hospital
Emergency response crews and defence medical personnel managed the triage and evacuation of the surviving crew members from the remote location on Monday evening. Two of the injured personnel, who were reported to be in critical condition, were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at approximately 7:30 pm. The remaining three injured soldiers were evacuated by transport plane, arriving at the Darwin medical facility at around 9:30 pm. The Department of Defence confirmed on Tuesday morning that the next of kin had been notified, while requesting that the public and media respect the privacy of the affected families and service members.
The Northern Territory supported two injured evacuations by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at about 7:30 last night and another three by plane at about 9:30 last night.

Safety investigations and government response
The Australian Defence Force launched a joint inquiry with local civil authorities to establish the technical and operational circumstances that led the vehicle to overturn. The military land accidents commission is examining the crash site alongside the Northern Territory Police, who are investigating the fatality on behalf of the Northern Territory coroner. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole confirmed that specialized resources were sent to Mount Bundey to assist the Defence Department with scene reconstruction. Federal leaders addressed the loss on Tuesday, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles describing the deceased service member as one of the nation's best soldiers. Veterans' Affairs Minister Matthew Keogh indicated that the army continues to examine its training systems to ensure the safety of personnel during high-intensity drills.
There are no safe or easy days for those who serve in our country's name.
Record of military training fatalities
The fatal rollover is the second training death recorded by the Australian Army in 2026. In May 2026, Special Air Service Regiment soldier Lachlan Muddle died after a mid-air collision with another paratrooper during a jump at the Jervis Bay airfield, located roughly 200 kilometres south of Sydney in New South Wales; the second soldier in that incident survived with minor injuries. Monday's crash also took place at the same northern facility where 25-year-old soldier Jason Challis was killed during a live-fire urban exercise in 2017. Challis, who had served less than a year, was fatally shot in the head and knee while stationed behind a plywood wall structure. A 2019 coronial inquest found that the exercise had been preventable, and the Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in court to failing to comply with workplace health and safety duties.
