Soldier dies in training accident at San Gregorio centre in Zaragoza

What happened

A soldier of the Spanish Army died on Sunday, 8 November 2026, during a training activity at the San Gregorio training centre in Zaragoza. The Army identified him only by his initials, F.J.G.J. The Army's general headquarters said the causes of the incident are under investigation, and the Ministry of Defence confirmed the death, according to El Confidencial. Sources at the Government Delegation in Aragon told Europa Press that the accident happened while the soldier was taking part in manoeuvres.

His unit and service record

According to the Army, he was assigned to the Campaign Artillery Group X of the 'Guzmán el Bueno' X Brigade. He had joined the Army in 2018. ABC reports that the brigade's main base is at Cerro Muriano, in Córdoba.

Army and association reactions

The Army said it deeply regretted the death and extended its condolences and "unconditional support" to the soldier's family, loved ones and comrades. It also issued a message to the soldier's memory.

“Their memory and devotion to the Homeland will always remain present in our hearts. Rest in peace.”

The Asociación de Tropa y Marinería Española (ATME) also expressed regret, offered its help to the family and unit, and said soldiers carry out high-risk work that, in its view, does not receive the recognition it deserves.

Earlier deaths in the same brigade

ABC reports that on 22 October 2026 another soldier of the brigade died after being run over at the Córdoba base, apparently by a Vamtac all-terrain military vehicle that was manoeuvring with poor visibility.

ABC also recalls that on 21 December 2023 a corporal and a soldier drowned in a lake during a training exercise at Cerro Muriano. According to ABC, the brigade has been hit by several fatal episodes over the last three years.

What remains open

The mechanism of the accident has not been disclosed, and the investigation covers its causes. The incident is the second death in the brigade reported within a few weeks, according to ABC.
