Romanian Schools Will Close on 5 October for World Teachers' Day Holiday
Students and teachers across Romania will receive a three-day weekend starting 3 October 2026, as pre-university institutions suspend all classes on Monday, 5 October, to observe World Teachers' Day.
Nationwide suspension of classes
Schools across Romania will remain closed on Monday, 5 October 2026, granting students and teaching staff a three-day weekend from 3 October to 5 October. The measure applies to units across pre-university education nationwide, including primary, secondary, and high schools, alongside participating institutions in higher education. Classes will resume according to regular schedules on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Educational authorities have confirmed that students and teachers will not be required to conduct makeup sessions for the suspended instructional hours. The holiday arrives midway through the opening module of the academic calendar, preceding the scheduled autumn break in late October.
Legal and contractual framework
The suspension of classroom activity is formalized under Ministry of Education and Research Order number 3,194/2026, which regulates the structure of the 2026–2027 academic year. In addition to ministerial decrees, the non-working status is codified in Collective Labour Agreement number 1,104, concluded on 9 July 2025 between the Ministry of Education and Research and representative education trade union federations. The collective agreement establishes that World Teachers' Day constitutes a non-working day for all personnel employed within the collective bargaining sector for education. The labour framework also guarantees two consecutive days of weekly rest, customarily on Saturday and Sunday, creating the extended three-day break.
On 5 October, International Education Day, and on non-working days or legal holidays provided by law and the applicable collective labour agreement, no classes are held.
Origins and domestic recognition
World Teachers' Day has been observed internationally on 5 October since 1994, following an initiative established by UNESCO. The date marks the anniversary of the 1966 adoption of the joint UNESCO and International Labour Organization Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. That foundational document was expanded in 1997 by the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel, creating the international benchmark for teachers' professional, ethical, and material conditions. Within the Romanian education system, 5 October is marked distinctly from National Teacher's Day (Ziua Învățătorului), an annual domestic observance celebrated on 5 June since 2013.
Calendar for the 2026–2027 school year

The second module runs from Monday, 2 November to Tuesday, 22 December 2026, followed by a winter vacation from 23 December 2026 through 10 January 2027.
