Qualcomm debuts 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 with 5GHz cores and Extreme AI tier
Announced at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, the 2nm silicon arrives in standard and Extreme configurations featuring 5GHz Oryon CPU cores, upgraded Adreno graphics, and on-device AI processing for upcoming flagship phones.
Two tiers on a 2nm node
At its annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm unveiled two flagship mobile processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both system-on-chips are fabricated on a 2nm process by TSMC, matching recent manufacturing shifts seen in Apple's A20 Pro and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro. The announcement introduces a dual-tier flagship strategy for mobile silicon, dividing the product line into a base flagship processor and an upgraded variant for top-tier devices. Qualcomm senior PR spokesperson Ellie Fortin detailed the rationale behind the dual-tier approach during the event.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits above Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 as our top-tier Elite platform, showcasing leadership in AI, gaming, and advanced platform technologies, and is designed to power the best, most aspirational devices.
CPU architecture and hardware gains
Both chipsets use an updated Oryon CPU layout featuring eight cores in total. The arrangement pairs two prime cores operating at frequencies up to 5GHz with six performance cores running at 4GHz, representing an increase from the 4.6GHz top speed of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The CPU pairs with 16MB of Oryon Flex Cache, a shared pool that dynamically routes cache memory to prime cores during high-intensity workloads. Across graphics and neural processing, the standard Gen 6 delivers a 35% speed increase in its Adreno GPU alongside a 14% boost in NPU execution speed and a 20% gain in energy efficiency per watt.

Extreme tier AI capabilities and video codecs
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 diverges from the base silicon through enhanced memory, expanded multimedia support, and higher compute ceilings. While the standard chip includes a sensing hub capable of executing models with up to 200 million parameters for localized transcription and speaker recognition, the Extreme tier runs on-device mixture-of-experts models containing over 30 billion parameters. The Extreme processor integrates 18MB of high-performance memory and equips its Adreno GPU with dedicated AI matrix cores for frame generation and super resolution in games. On the camera front, the standard model records 8K video at 30 frames per second via its Spectra image signal processor, whereas the Extreme tier reaches 8K at 60 frames per second, supports 4K slow motion at 240 frames per second, and introduces hardware compatibility with the Advanced Professional Video (APV) and VVC codecs.
Device deployment and commercial timelines
Smartphone manufacturers have started committing to the new platforms across upcoming device portfolios. Motorola confirmed that its Signature 27 handset will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, with commercial availability scheduled for later in 2026. Qualcomm confirmed that phone makers including Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, OnePlus, iQoo, Nubia, Redmi, Redmagic, and ZTE will release devices containing the Gen 6 series chips. Lekha Motiwala, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm, explained the market distribution intended for the two versions.
Some OEMs are trying to reach the pinnacle of technology, while others are trying to reach broader audiences. We want to give choice and flexibility to the OEMs.
