Netflix taps YouTuber Plex to host island reality show Plex: Última partida
Filming has started in the Dominican Republic with producer Fremantle, featuring celebrity contestants competing under rules dictated by the 24-year-old creator.
Format and production details
Netflix has officially announced the start of production for Plex: Última partida, an adventure and strategy competition reality show set across several islands in the Dominican Republic. The streaming company has partnered with production powerhouse Fremantle, the company responsible for formats such as Got Talent, Mask Singer, American Idol, and X Factor. This project continues Fremantle's existing production relationship with Netflix in Spain, where the two companies previously collaborated on reality titles including Amor con fianza and Jugando con fuego. The upcoming series transports a group of celebrity contestants to a remote beach environment to compete in various physical resistance and skill trials for a cash prize. Unlike standard reality television formats that emphasize interpersonal domestic drama, the production deliberately excludes cohabitation storylines, centering entirely on competitive gaming dynamics.
The game master role
Spanish creator Daniel Alonso Agúndez, recognized globally by his online pseudonym YoSoyPlex or Plex, will headline the project in a central commanding role rather than operating as a conventional presenter. Netflix structured the format so that the 24-year-old creator acts as the official game master, serving as referee, judge, and distributor of game mechanics throughout the contest.
He will set the rules and decide the destiny of the players.
This operational power gives Alonso Agúndez direct authority over how contestants navigate obstacles and face potential elimination. The format was tailored around his digital brand, which revolves around physical challenges, travel, remote exploration, and competitive spectacles.
Casting secrecy and competition mechanics
In its initial production announcement, Netflix omitted the identities of the participating celebrities, leaving the contestant roster as one of the show's main unconfirmed elements. The platform confirmed that the lineup will feature recognized competitors drawn from both social media creator circles and traditional television entertainment. Beyond categorizing the program as a strategy and competition reality series, the company has not revealed the specific structure of the trials, the point allocation system, or the exact criteria required to secure overall victory. Furthermore, Netflix has not announced an official premiere date for the show as filming gets underway across Caribbean locations.
