The brawl

On the evening of Tuesday, 3 November, a group of about 15 people went to a minor female student's home in the Zarouchleika area of Patras, according to her complaint, where they insulted and threatened her. Relatives and friends of the girl came to the spot, and more members of the first group then arrived. The two groups clashed, and eight people were injured and taken to hospital. Reports say the injuries were light and that all eight left hospital after receiving first aid.

Police operation

Officers from the rapid response unit, the DIAS team and the Patras criminal investigation sub-directorate located a car carrying four people and searched it. They seized a Tokarev pistol with a magazine holding five cartridges, a plastic knuckle-duster replica, a full-face hood, a helmet and a small amount of cannabis. The police say the gun was seized during the investigation, and their statement does not say it was used in the clash. Of the 12 people arrested, eight were the injured people taken to hospital and four were the occupants of the car, and one of the 12 is a minor. A case file was opened for brawling, dangerous bodily harm and breaches of weapons and drugs legislation. The four suspects are to be brought before the Achaia first-instance prosecutor, and investigators are still working to identify others who may have taken part.

Political reaction

The KKE and KNE Achaia organisations described an organised fascist and criminal attack on a student who is a KNE member and part of the Patras student coordinating committee, and said KNE members who came to her defence were also injured. Their statement added that the earlier days had seen repeated attempts to intimidate the student, including outside her home.

“They are deluding themselves if they think such actions will terrorise the student movement and the members of the KKE and KNE.”

The Municipality of Patras also issued a statement and called a rally of local organisations at Tarampoura square at 18:00 on 4 November. Its statement condemned the attack in strong terms.

“The Municipal Authority of Patras denounces the murderous attack by a group of fascists that targeted a pioneering student.”

A separate account from in.gr, citing the site 902.gr, goes further than the official statements. It claims that about 40 attackers used helmets and knuckle-dusters and shouted for knives to be drawn, and that two students were seriously hurt, one with a broken jaw and another with a nose injury.

Open questions

The accounts of the injuries differ. Most reports describe light injuries for the eight people taken to hospital, while in.gr's account describes two serious injuries. The rally at Tarampoura square is scheduled for 18:00 on 4 November, and the police investigation into the other participants is continuing without a stated timetable for charges.
