The victim's account
Initially the victim told officers that two unknown people approached him on a motorbike and tried to snatch his phone, and that when he resisted he was stabbed at least twice in the leg and thigh. Later he told police the attack had political motives. He said one attacker wore a Panathinaikos shirt, and that the attackers told him: 'We are in charge here. We will kill you because you are left-wing.' He said he was targeted over a social media post containing the attackers' details and photos, but that he had not made the post and may have been mistaken for someone else. He also said he was not present at an August clash between far-right and anti-fascist groups in the area and had no link to the publication of far-right members' details.
Police and the investigation
Police sources linked the attack possibly to the August clash, after which details of some far-right individuals were published on an anti-authoritarian website. Police statements reported by Skai describe the attackers as far-right and the victim as an anti-fascist. Officers are trying to identify the suspects using photographic material and are checking the victim's account. A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the West Attica Security Directorate, and the attackers are being sought. Accounts of the number of attackers differ: most outlets describe two people, while one Skai report describes three men.
Political reactions
SYRIZA condemned what it called a fascist attack and said it brings to mind earlier cases with far worse outcomes, naming the murders of Shahzad Luqman and the anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas. Its statement continued:
Let us not leave room for the reappearance of the Golden Dawn 'attack battalions' and neo-Nazi criminals.
MeRA25 described the attack as premeditated and politically motivated. In its statement it said:
This is a premeditated, politically motivated act that recalls the darkest practices of the neo-Nazis.
NEWS24/7 reported, citing information it received, that the attackers have ties to the neo-Nazi organisation Propatria. The outlet also reported that residents it spoke to know the attackers as members of the far-right scene. No police statement in these reports addresses that link.
Open points
The reports disagree on the time of the attack, the number of attackers and the victim's age, with one Skai report giving his age as 30 and born in 1994, while the others give 32. The attackers had not been identified in the reports, and the investigation is continuing.
