Firefighters contain wildfire sparked by vehicle in Lefkes on Greek island of Paros

A wildfire broke out at approximately 13:30 on Saturday, 12 September 2026, in the Stroumboula area near the village of Lefkes on the Cycladic island of Paros. The blaze originated in low vegetation after a four-wheeled vehicle operating in the area caught fire, quickly spreading flames into the adjacent dry brush and scrubland. The Hellenic Fire Service received the initial emergency call at 13:30 and mobilized a local response unit consisting of six firefighters and three fire trucks. Paros municipal authorities assisted the operation immediately, dispatching two municipal water tankers and one earthmoving construction machine to assist ground crews in creating containment perimeters. Local civilian volunteers joined official personnel at the scene to help slow the initial spread across the dry terrain.

Aerial mobilization and inter-island reinforcements

As the flames advanced through areas of low vegetation, fire commanders increased the operational deployment to ten firefighters and five fire trucks. Six aerial firefighting assets operated over the front on a rotational basis, consisting of four fixed-wing airplanes and two helicopters dropping water directly onto hotspots. Due to limited island resources, emergency services organized reinforcement units from neighboring islands across the Aegean Sea. A Hellenic Fire Service high-speed vessel transferred seven firefighters from Syros directly to Paros. Gioutzidis stated that rapid coordination between the local fire brigade, municipal departments, the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Paros (DEYAP), and the Civil Protection operations centre was decisive in halting the blaze before it expanded.

Firefighting crews brought the wildfire under control and fully delineated the perimeter later on Saturday afternoon. Despite containing the active fire front, local municipal services and fire crews remained on site on high alert. Responders maintained continuous surveillance over sections of dense vegetation where high residual temperatures created risks of rekindling. In parallel with ongoing ground monitoring, the Cyclades Arson Crimes Investigation Department initiated an official investigation to determine the precise circumstances and mechanical causes of the vehicle fire that triggered the incident. Ground units and municipal water tankers maintained their positions into Saturday evening to suppress any potential flare-ups.
