Wildfire in Cephalonia Prompts Evacuation of Three Villages Toward Airport
A forest fire in Metaxata on the Greek island of Cephalonia led emergency services to deploy 25 firefighters, three aircraft, and order the evacuation of three villages on Sunday afternoon.
Outbreak in Metaxata
A forest fire broke out in the woodland area of Metaxata on the Greek Ionian island of Cephalonia on Sunday afternoon, 4 October 2026. The Operations Centre of the Hellenic Fire Service received the first emergency call alerting them to the incident at approximately 16:20. The fire started in dense vegetation and quickly gained ground in the rural outskirts of the community. With conditions allowing the perimeter of the fire to spread rapidly across the brushland, emergency services raised an immediate alert across the regional fire management network.

Emergency evacuation orders
As the front expanded, the Civil Protection authorities activated the national 112 emergency notification system to execute precautionary evacuations across the municipal unit. The alert was issued to mobile phones in the vicinity at 16:51, with follow-up warnings delivered shortly after 17:00 as the fire continued to develop. Residents and visitors across three separate settlements (Kourkoumelata, Metaxata, and Lakithra) received instructions to vacate the area without delay. The designated emergency route directed people to travel through the district of Leivathos toward Cephalonia Airport to stay clear of the active fire zone.
The official message from the Civil Protection mechanism ordered immediate compliance from everyone in the path of the smoke:
Extremely urgent notification. Civil Protection. Fire in your area. If you are in the areas of Kourkoumelata, Metaxata and Lakithra of Cephalonia, evacuate via Leivathos towards the airport. Follow the instructions of the Authorities.
Firefighting deployment and aerial support
Ground containment efforts began with an initial contingent of 19 firefighters operating five fire engines, alongside one specialized on-foot team from the 16th Special Unit for Disaster Operations (16th EMODE). As the flames gained intensity in the forest tract, the operational command reinforced the response, raising the total ground deployment to 25 firefighters and seven vehicles. The personnel concentrated their efforts on establishing defensive barriers between the advancing fireline and the residential perimeters of the three threatened communities.
To contain the blaze from the air before sunset, the Fire Service mobilized three aerial assets to the operational sector. Two firefighting airplanes and one helicopter carried out water drops over the rough woodland terrain. The aerial units coordinated with the ground crews of the 16th EMODE to suppress hot spots and prevent the blaze from cresting nearby hillsides.

Municipal coordination and arson investigation
Civil authorities on the island mobilized auxiliary resources to support the firefighting mission. The Municipality of Cephalonia provided water-carrying trucks and earthmoving construction machinery to assist the fire crews, ensuring a continuous water supply for the engines and clearing access tracks through the brush. Local government machinery worked alongside emergency responders to clear vegetation along transit corridors in Leivathos.
Following standard protocol for woodland fires, the Fire Service activated the Arson Crimes Investigation Department of Corfu (Kerkira). Specialized arson investigators were deployed to examine the origin point in Metaxata and determine the exact cause of the ignition.
