The 20th Asian Games opened in Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday, 19 September 2026, five years after the Tokyo Olympics were staged in empty stadiums due to pandemic restrictions. Fans returned to the stands at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium for an opening ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. local time (0900 GMT). Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi under the theme "Harmonic Heart Beat", the ceremony aimed to project continental solidarity. The quadrennial competition features more than 11,000 athletes representing 45 nations and regions across 43 sports and 469 medal events. The sports schedule is larger than the Summer Olympics, introducing virtual taekwondo to the programme while retaining esports and breaking.

Logistics and accommodation disputes

Organisers avoided constructing a dedicated athletes village to control costs, housing competitors and team staff across a network of hotels, a cruise ship docked in the bay, and temporary wooden containers at Garden Pier. Several delegations, including the Japanese host team, reported logistical errors involving double-bookings and room allocation errors. The South Korean delegation stated that the temporary container units were too small for its basketball squad, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India secured private hotel rooms for the men's cricket team after receiving a limited bed allocation. Delegations also reported lengthy registration queues on arrival, delayed shuttle buses, and transit drivers navigating to incorrect venues. Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani characterised the disruptions as initial operational difficulties.

From what I've seen, the local authorities here have been solving any issues that are happening, and I think now that everyone is settled, everything is hopefully being on track.

Protocol standoff over Taiwan delegation

Political friction arose ahead of the opening ceremony during a flag-raising event on Friday, 18 September 2026. Taiwan sports minister Lee Yang, a two-time Olympic badminton gold medallist from the Tokyo and Paris Games, was initially barred from entering the venue. The Taiwan team staged a protest by refusing to participate, delaying the ceremony by more than an hour before officials admitted Lee. Taiwan's cabinet issued a statement describing the incident as unreasonable obstruction of an accredited official. Olympic Council of Asia officials responded to the confrontation by asserting that political representatives should remain separate from athletic competition.

Kit delivery failure forces India flagbearer swap

Logistical errors affected national delegations directly on the day of the opening ceremony. The Indian Olympic Association replaced shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor as India's male flagbearer after his official ceremonial uniform was left behind in India. Toor, a 31-year-old athlete targeting a third consecutive Asian Games gold medal, explained that his kit was scheduled to land at the airport at 3 p.m. local time, making transit to the stadium before the parade impossible. The national Olympic committee cited a technical issue and selected kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat as the replacement flagbearer. Sehrawat led the Indian contingent alongside shooter Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics.

I'm told that my kit will reach at 3 p.m. at the airport. Reaching the opening ceremony venue after collecting my kit from airport on time will be very difficult. So, I've told IOA (Indian Olympic Association) that I'm not coming for opening ceremony.
