Szymon Marciniak to referee Argentina's World Cup opener against Algeria

Szymon Marciniak has been selected as the main referee for the Argentina–Algeria Group J match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, slated for 17 June at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. His assistants will be fellow Poles Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik, with Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh of New Zealand as fourth official. The kick-off is set for 3:00 AM Polish time on the night of 16–17 June, though one report also listed 21:00 on 16 June local time. Marciniak had not been assigned to any of the tournament's opening matches and now appears for the first group-phase round.
The opening match and VAR experiment
The 2026 competition has introduced a new protocol: referees wear microphones and announce their VAR decisions directly to the crowd. FIFA says the change aims for transparency, but its debut in the South Africa–Mexico opener brought unintended attention. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio issued three red cards and his heavily accented announcements became a meme, with many viewers finding them unintelligible. A reunion with Argentina
Four years ago in Qatar, Marciniak took charge of the final that saw Argentina beat France on penalties, crowning Lionel Messi's career. That match made the Pole only the second referee from his country to officiate a World Cup final. Now the 45-year-old from Płock will again meet the Argentine squad, this time in their title-defence opener. Marciniak is participating in his third World Cup after Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, and has also handled key fixtures at UEFA EURO 2016 and 2024.

Argentina enter the tournament as defending champions, with Messi leading the side in what may be his final World Cup. Algeria, meanwhile, are looking to upset the group hierarchy; Group J also includes Austria and Jordan.
