Jaguar unveils £130,000 Type 01 electric grand tourer in New York reboot
Jaguar presented the production Type 01 in New York, a 5.2-metre electric grand tourer priced at £130,000 that doubles predecessor pricing and targets younger luxury buyers.
New York reveal and body design
Jaguar presented the production version of its all-electric Type 01 grand tourer at an event in New York on Tuesday evening. The four-door vehicle measures more than 5.2 metres in length and 2 metres in width, featuring a low roofline, an extended bonnet, 23-inch wheels, and no rear window. Aerodynamic features including active vanes and a deployable spoiler deliver a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd alongside a 50-50 weight distribution. The traditional leaping-jaguar emblem has moved from the front grille to a laser-etched badge on the side finishers. Production requires four-storey pressing tools that apply 2,500 tonnes of force to manufacture the single aluminium rear panel spanning from the wheel arch to the roofline, following 1,500 hours of tool development.

Powertrain and battery engineering
The Type 01 is powered by an electric drivetrain generating over 1,000 horsepower, with sources reporting figures between 1,016 bhp and 1,030 hp. A 118 kWh usable battery pack delivers an estimated driving range of up to 450 miles on a single charge, revised from an earlier target of 478 miles. Fast-charging capability replenishes 200 miles of range in 13 minutes, improving on the 15-minute estimate announced during initial concept development. Exterior lighting utilizes four ultra-slim lines housing roughly 120 individual light-emitting diodes at the front, paired with full-width rear lights concealed behind horizontal strikethroughs. While the earlier Type 00 prototype appeared in bright pink and blue, the production car will also offer silver and blue paint finishes.
Luxury repositioning and market strategy
The car carries an entry price of £130,000 (about $172,000), representing more than double the £62,000 starting price of the discontinued F-Type sports car. Jaguar is abandoning the volume premium sector to target wealthy, technology-literate urban buyers, particularly in the United States, after years of declining sales and shrinking customer demographics. Managing director Rawdon Glover noted that the brand aims to establish commercial viability by selling fewer vehicles at higher margins rather than battling German competitors.
We need to put Jaguar back on a firm footing.
Parent company Jaguar Land Rover positioned the Type 01 between high-end volume cars costing up to £120,000 and ultra-luxury marques that exceed £300,000. In September 2026, JLR also unveiled the first electric Range Rover SUV at a starting price of £154,070, compared to £107,530 for its internal combustion predecessor.

Brand restructuring and delivery schedule
The unveiling concludes a two-year period during which Jaguar halted new car sales in the United Kingdom following the cancellation of an electric XJ saloon. The transformation began with a November 2024 advertising campaign that showed brightly dressed models without vehicles, drawing public criticism and preceding the exit of chief creative officer Gerry McGovern. JLR is restructuring following competition from Chinese manufacturers and recovering from a cyber-attack that cost the wider economy an estimated £1.9bn. The manufacturer recently announced 4,000 job cuts across non-manufacturing roles, offering voluntary redundancy packages that included staff assigned to the Type 01 project. Customer orders will open in early 2027, with the first deliveries scheduled for the second half of 2027.
Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant - that's their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning.
