Over 61,000 passengers leave Attica ports on first weekend of August exodus
More than 61,800 travellers sailed from Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio on Saturday, with similar numbers expected Sunday as the August holiday peak hits Greece's main ports and highways.
Saturday's exodus by the numbers
A total of 61,852 passengers left the four main ports of Attica on Saturday, 1 August 2026, as the traditional August holiday exodus reached its first weekend peak. From Piraeus, 23 ships carried 29,966 travellers to island destinations. The Argosaronic lines recorded 57 sailings and 11,586 passengers. Rafina handled 15 departures with 11,324 passengers, mostly heading to the Cyclades, while Lavrio saw 14 sailings and 8,976 passengers.

Sunday outlook
Departure schedules remain heavy on Sunday, 2 August. Piraeus has 23 planned sailings to Aegean islands and Crete. The Argosaronic network expects 55 departures, split between 31 fast ferries and 24 conventional vessels. Rafina lists 15 scheduled routes, and Lavrio has 13 departures on the timetable. Port authorities are advising passengers to arrive early, especially those travelling with vehicles, as road congestion around the terminals is likely to persist.
Road and bus traffic
Traffic around Piraeus port was severely congested on Saturday morning and midday. The queue stretched from the Peace and Friendship Stadium, and the drive to the departure gates took 20 to 25 minutes. Similar conditions are expected on Sunday. On the national roads, heavy traffic was reported on the Athens-Corinth and Athens-Lamia highways, as well as on sections of Attiki Odos, with delays concentrated at toll stations and exits toward coastal resorts. Intercity KTEL buses were also full, and operators added extra services to meet demand.
Weather and fire concerns
A sailing ban imposed late Friday afternoon was lifted the same evening, allowing ships from Rafina and Lavrio to resume normal operations. Some Friday sailings from Rafina were transferred to Saturday at Lavrio. Recent adverse weather and large wildfires in several parts of the country have disrupted travel plans for many. Authorities are urging travellers to exercise caution, avoid any activity that could spark a fire, and stay informed about road and sea conditions.
Authorities' response
The Hellenic Coast Guard has been placed on heightened alert, with additional order and traffic measures to facilitate safe boarding of passengers and vehicles. Port and traffic police are recommending that holidaymakers check road and ferry updates before departing, leave earlier than usual, and follow official instructions throughout their journey.
