Athens and Piraeus close central roads and truncate tram lines for Sunday races
Greek authorities are closing central corridors in Athens and Piraeus on Sunday, 4 October 2026, while curtailing Tram Lines 6 and 7 to accommodate multiple sold-out road races and triathlons.
Traffic restrictions across central Athens
The Greek capital will implement extensive vehicular restrictions on Sunday, 4 October 2026, to accommodate the annual Greece Race for the Cure. The athletic event features a 5-kilometre running race alongside a 2-kilometre walk, with all entry places fully booked prior to race day. Both routes start on the Alexandras Avenue side of Pedion tou Areos, leading runners through key central avenues before finishing back at the park grounds. Initial traffic bans take effect between 06:00 and 13:00 along Alexandras Avenue from Charilaou Trikoupi to Patision towards Kifisias Avenue, as well as Evelpidon Street between Prigkiponision and Kodrigktonos towards Patision. From 07:30 until 13:00, closures will expand to Alexandras Avenue between Kifisias and Loukareos, Mavromataion along its entire length, and Patision between Agiou Meletiou, Kodrigktonos, and Omonoia Square in both directions. Police will also close 3rd Septemvriou, Marni from Vathi Square to Patision, Akadimias between Charilaou Trikoupi and Vasilissis Sofias, and the entire length of Panepistimiou. Perpendicular vehicle crossing along the closed course will be permitted only at the traffic-controlled intersection of Patision and Kodrigktonos.
Coastal shutdowns for Run Greece Piraeus
In Piraeus, municipal authorities and the Hellenic Police are executing broad traffic halts from 07:00 to 13:00 for the Run Greece Piraeus 2026 road race. The designated race course covers extensive sections of the local road grid and waterfront, halting normal vehicular movement across central and seaside routes. Affected arteries include Grigoriou Lampraki, Akti Moutsopoulou, Iroon Polytechniou Avenue, and 34ou Syntagmatos Pezikou. Additional closures will apply to Evangelistrias, Pylis, Alexandrou Papanastasiou Avenue, Vasileos Pavlou Avenue, and Akti Kountouriotou. Police officers will direct drivers away from the port district, recommending alternative bypass routes around Piraeus throughout the morning.

Tram network modifications across Attica
Urban rail operator STASY announced targeted timetable modifications and line truncations across the Athens tram network on Sunday to coordinate with the sporting events. On Tram Line 6 between Pikrodafni and Syntagma, services will terminate at the Fix stop between 06:00 and 12:00, operating solely along the Pikrodafni to Fix section. On Tram Line 7 between Asklipieio Voulas and Akti Poseidonos in Piraeus, trams will terminate at the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) station from 08:30 to 13:00. The adjustments prevent tram operations through active race zones in central Athens and the Piraeus coastal road network. Regular full-line services on both tram routes are scheduled to resume shortly after 13:00 following the completion of the races and the reopening of adjacent roads.
Local races in Petroupoli, Marathon, and Aitoliko
Road closures and diversions will simultaneously affect several outlying municipalities across the Attica basin and in western Greece on Sunday morning. In Petroupoli, rolling traffic stops will take effect from 08:30 to 11:00 for the 4th Popular Road Race, impacting sections of Kolokotroni, Voreiou Ipeirou, Feron, 25th Martiou, Ignatiou, Prokopiou, Eleftheriou Venizelou, and Markou Botsari. In the municipality of Marathon, traffic measures will operate from 07:45 to 12:30 for the Armed Forces and Security Forces Men and Women Triathlon Championship. Authorities in Marathon will enforce a lane contraflow on Souliou Avenue alongside full temporary road closures on sections of the triathlon route. Additional disruptions will occur in Aitoliko due to local sporting events, while road maintenance at the Metamorfosi interchange on the Attiki Odos motorway will impose further lane restrictions on regional drivers.
