A second phase with 994 product codes

The second phase of the National Price Reduction Initiative now lists 994 product codes, according to figures the Independent Authority for Market Control and Consumer Protection has published so far. The codes cover November and December 2026, and the average cut to the base shelf price stands at 7.1%. The list remains open, and the authority continues talks with suppliers and supermarket chains to add more products. Participation is voluntary, so each business picks its own products and the depth of its cuts. Additional promotions can be stacked on top of the reduced base price, which the authority says can raise the saving for shoppers. From 4 November 2026, the participating codes will be searchable on the posokanei.gov.gr platform, where consumers can check prices.

Cuts by category

Branded products make up 628 of the codes, with an average reduction of 6.7%. Private-label products number 307 codes and carry an average cut of 8%. The list also includes 59 meat codes, averaging a 7.3% reduction. Across all 994 codes, the authority's published data puts the average at 7.1%. Earlier ERT reporting, carried by NEWS 24/7 on 2 November and by NewsIT on 3 November, had projected a cut slightly above 6.5%, a figure the published list does not match. Extension and the first phase

The agreement has been extended to 31 December 2026 after pressure from Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and the authority's head, according to NEWS 24/7. The first phase ran over September and October 2026 with 1,790 product codes and an average cut of 9.5%. The second phase drops the 450 school-supply codes that were included before. Earlier reports put the second-phase count at about 1,000 codes, while the authority's figure of 994 is the newer count. The chart below sets the code counts of the two phases side by side.

Christmas package

Talks between the government and industry continue on a festive package for Christmas and New Year. Takis Theodorikakos has previewed, in a television interview, price cuts of up to 25% on food codes that would be included in that package. The package is expected to apply in the last weeks of 2026 and to cover products traditionally consumed at Christmas and New Year's Day. The festive basket is slated to take effect in the last two weeks of the year. The articles do not yet name the products in the package, and the timeline below lists the key dates reported so far.
