Princess Diana's 1994 revenge dress goes to auction at Sotheby's with $300,000 estimate

Sotheby's announced that Princess Diana's black silk evening dress, known as the revenge dress, will go on sale at its New York auction room on 9 December 2026. The auction house estimates the piece between $150,000 and $300,000, equivalent to £110,000 to £220,000 or €130,000 to €250,000. It marks the first time the custom piece by Greek designer Christina Stambolian has entered the market since 1997. A portion of the proceeds from the upcoming sale will go to NHS Lothian Charity in support of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

The evening at the Serpentine Gallery

Diana wore the off-the-shoulder, form-fitting black dress with an asymmetric hem to a Vanity Fair gala at the Serpentine Gallery in London on 29 June 1994. The public appearance coincided with the broadcast of a national television interview in which the then Prince Charles admitted to marital infidelity. Diana had commissioned the gown from Stambolian three years earlier but had kept it in her wardrobe after considering it too daring for royal protocol. Her stylist at the time, Anna Harvey, recounted that Diana decided at the last minute to replace a planned Valentino gown because she wanted to look like a million dollars. Diana paired the dress with sheer black tights, red nail polish, matching red lipstick, and a multi-strand pearl choker centered on a sapphire brooch gifted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Provenance and charity auction history

Diana wore the dress in public only once before consigning it alongside 78 other garments to a Christie's charity auction in New York on 25 June 1997, two months before her death in Paris. That sale raised more than $3 million for cancer and AIDS charities. Scottish collectors Briege and Grahame Mackenzie purchased the Stambolian gown for $65,000 (recorded at £39,098), holding it in private hands for nearly three decades and occasionally using it for philanthropic exhibitions. Designer Christina Stambolian later compared the princess's bold aesthetic choice to Odile, the black swan in Swan Lake.

Global tour and market precedents

Before the New York sale during Sotheby's Luxury Week at the Breuer Building, the gown will travel on an international exhibition tour. Public viewings are scheduled in London from 18 September to 24 September 2026, followed by exhibitions in Hong Kong and Geneva. Other items from Diana's wardrobe have commanded significant sums in recent years. In 2023, her Victor Edelstein velvet dress fetched $604,800 at auction, her Jacques Azagury evening gown sold for $1.148 million, and her Warm & Wonderful black sheep sweater achieved $1.24 million (£920,000) at Sotheby's in New York. Earlier in 2026, the 1994 Jaguar XJ40 that transported Diana to the Serpentine Gallery sold for £66,250 ($90,000).
