A yellow gown and a royal tiara at Windsor
The Princess of Wales wore the Lover's Knot tiara at a state banquet at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, 20 October, held in honour of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman. King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted the dinner in St George's Hall, and about 160 guests attended, according to Notícias ao Minuto and La Razón. Kate paired the diadem with a yellow Elie Saab gown that had a cape and a pleated skirt, and carried a gold clutch. Her jewellery drew on the royal collection, but outlets differ on the earrings: La Razón links them to Queen Elizabeth II, while Fanpage describes Greville diamond earrings and a bracelet from Queen Mary. Fanpage adds that she completed the look with the brooch, sash and star of the Royal Victorian Order, which tradition requires for state dinners.
The tiara's history
The Lover's Knot was made by Garrard for Queen Mary, with sources dating its creation to 1913 and others to 1914. Its diamonds and pearl drops are set in silver and gold, and the design drew on a tiara that had belonged to Mary's grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse. After Mary died in 1953, the tiara passed to Queen Elizabeth II, who lent it to Princess Diana as a wedding gift in 1981, according to ABC Tu Diario en Español, although Diana did not wear it on the day. Fanpage reports that Diana last wore it in 1991, after which it was kept out of public view until Kate first wore it in 2015. Fanpage counts at least a dozen appearances by Kate since then, while 7sur7 says she has worn it twice this year.
Other tiaras on the night
Queen Camilla wore the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a piece that Queen Elizabeth II was particularly fond of and that appears on several banknotes and coins, according to 7sur7. Princess Anne wore the Meander tiara, which originally belonged to her grandmother, Princess Alice. Since marrying Prince William, Kate has worn only five different tiaras, according to 7sur7. The Lover's Knot is by far her favourite.
Visit and coverage context
Sultan Haitham bin Tarik is on a state visit to the United Kingdom, and Fanpage reports that he will spend three days in London. The same outlet describes it as the first visit to the UK by an Omani monarch in more than 40 years, and notes that the sultan travelled without his wife, Sayyida Ahad. Notícias ao Minuto, citing international press, says the banquet table measured about 50 metres. ABC Tu Diario en Español places the Windsor dinner within the same week as other European state dinners, noting that Denmark hosted Vietnam's president and Sweden hosted Singapore's. Kate's gown was part of Elie Saab's Spring/Summer 2025 collection, according to Fanpage.
