Atlantic cold front to drop temperatures below 20 degrees across northern Spain
Spain will face an autumn chill on Thursday as an Atlantic air mass pushes daytime temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius across northern regions and triggers weather alerts in seven communities.
Atlantic cold front arrives across the peninsula
A cold maritime air mass traveling from the Atlantic will sweep across mainland Spain on Thursday, 8 October 2026, replacing recent torrential downpours with unseasonably low temperatures. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts a sharp thermal drop that will establish autumnal weather across northern and central Spain. Daytime maximum temperatures will fall below 20 degrees Celsius in numerous northern and interior provincial capitals, including Ávila, Burgos, León, Logroño, Lugo, Oviedo, Palencia, Pamplona, Salamanca, Santander, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Vitoria. Madrid will record a maximum of around 19 degrees Celsius, whereas southern Atlantic areas will remain much warmer, with Huelva and Seville reaching 31 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists expect the cool air to keep both daytime and overnight readings below normal for this time of year through Saturday.

Weather warnings and mountain conditions
Adverse weather will put seven autonomous communities on official meteorological alert on Thursday as northern winds blow strongly across the country. AEMET has issued orange alerts for persistent, heavy rainfall in Asturias, covering the Cordillera and Picos de Europa, and in Cantabria for central areas and the Villaverde Valley. Coastal sectors in Catalonia will face orange warnings for dangerous sea swells in Girona and powerful wind gusts in Tarragona. Yellow alerts for rainfall, thunderstorms, and coastal hazards will also cover Barcelona, Girona, the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca, the Cantabrian slope of Navarre, Gipuzkoa, and Castellón. Morning mist and fog banks will develop across northern valleys, mountain areas, La Mancha, and the Strait of Gibraltar, while the cold air will deliver the season's first snow accumulations to the highest Pyrenean peaks alongside light alpine frosts.
Regional impact in Castilla y León
The inland territory of Castilla y León will experience a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures, accompanied by northern winds and cloudy intervals. Provincial capitals in the region will record daytime maximums ranging from 14 degrees Celsius in Burgos and 15 degrees in Soria to 16 degrees in Ávila, León, and Palencia, 17 degrees in Salamanca and Segovia, 19 degrees in Valladolid, and 20 degrees in Zamora. Overnight lows across the region will fall sharply, reaching 4 degrees in Ávila, 6 degrees in Segovia, 7 degrees in Burgos, León, Palencia, and Salamanca, 8 degrees in Soria and Valladolid, and 9 degrees in Zamora. Meanwhile, an approaching Atlantic trough will generate cloudiness and scattered, locally moderate showers across the Canary Islands, though meteorologists emphasize uncertainty regarding its exact track. AEMET spokesperson Rubén del Campo explained how atmospheric conditions will evolve into the weekend.
A more stable weather pattern will predominate, but still with the possibility of showers in areas of the southern third, Ceuta and the Canary Islands.
Outlook through Sunday
The unseasonably cold spell will continue through Friday and Saturday, with early morning lows dropping below 5 degrees Celsius in several parts of the northern half of the peninsula. Forecasters are also monitoring the possible arrival of an isolated high-altitude depression (DANA) near the southern third, Ceuta, and the Canary Islands on Friday. Persistent rainfall in the northern third and the Balearics will gradually diminish as higher atmospheric pressure establishes itself over the mainland. Temperatures will stay depressed until Sunday, 11 October, when readings across Spain will begin climbing back toward typical seasonal levels.
- Cold Atlantic air mass sweeps across Spain, lowering northern maximums below 20°C and placing seven communities on alert
- Temperatures drop further in central and southern regions, while forecasters monitor a possible isolated depression in the south
- Cold weather persists across the country with readings remaining below seasonal averages
- Temperatures begin climbing again as the autumn cold spell weakens
