Fire at aerosol factory in northern Poland contained after 200 firefighters battle blaze; 20 residents evacuated

Fire breaks out

On Sunday, June 21, around 12:40 p.m., a fire broke out at an aerosol production plant in Charnowo, near Ustka in northern Poland. Flames quickly engulfed the entire facility, covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. The plant contained pressurized aerosol containers and LPG tanks, which posed a risk of explosions. Witnesses reported that parts of the roof structure were blown off and scattered around the site.

Firefighting response

Around 60 fire units from the State Fire Service (PSP) and Volunteer Fire Brigades (OSP) were deployed, involving roughly 200 firefighters. A specialized chemical group monitored the smoke and air quality, while drones provided aerial surveillance. A firefighting robot was used in the most dangerous zones where exploding aerosol cans threatened responders. Firefighters also cooled LPG tanks to prevent a larger blast. The most hazardous substances had already burned out by the time the fire was brought under control.

Containment and ongoing operations

By 7 p.m. on Sunday, the fire was localized, meaning it was no longer spreading. However, extinguishing operations continued through the night. On Monday morning, Captain Piotr Basarab of the Słupsk PSP said that 20 units remained on site, and the work of dousing hotspots and searching the debris would last several more hours. A morning briefing was scheduled for around 9 a.m. to assess whether additional resources were needed.

The worst is behind us. Operations will continue for at least a few more hours; the situation will be clarified after the morning briefing.

Evacuations and air quality

As a precaution, 20 residents from nearby homes and 8 people from the factory were evacuated. Authorities advised people to stay indoors, close windows, and turn off air conditioning due to potential harmful substances in the smoke. Air quality was continuously monitored, and residents would be allowed to return once it was deemed safe. The evacuation zone covered a radius of about 200 meters from the plant.

Due to the fire in Charnowo and the possibility of harmful substances in the air, we ask you to stay at home and limit going outside to the absolute minimum. We recommend closing windows and doors and turning off air conditioning.

Cause and investigation

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Police secured the area and will begin procedural actions after the fire is fully extinguished and a building inspector examines the site. No injuries were reported.
