Fire damages 500-square-meter solar roof of Biedronka store in Jastrzębie-Zdrój
Over 20 fire crews responded to a roof fire covering 500 square meters of solar panels at a Biedronka store in Jastrzębie-Zdrój on Wednesday evening. All occupants evacuated safely without injuries.
Outbreak at the supermarket roof
A fire broke out on Wednesday evening at a commercial property in the southern Polish city of Jastrzębie-Zdrój. The emergency unfolded at a Biedronka supermarket located along Niepodległości street, situated within the city's Bzie district. Flames took hold across the upper section of the commercial facility, rapidly spreading along the exterior roof covering. State Fire Service units determined that the fire encompassed approximately 500 square meters of the building's roof structure. The affected area was heavily outfitted with photovoltaic solar panel installations, presenting specific operational challenges for responders on site. Both fire rescue teams and police units were dispatched immediately to the location to assess the spreading blaze and initiate safety measures around the property.
Evacuation and emergency notification
All occupants present inside the commercial facility evacuated the building before emergency responders arrived on the scene. Fire service officials and local emergency personnel confirmed that no injuries were sustained among customers or staff during the incident. Regional rescue dispatchers were alerted to the blaze shortly after eight o'clock in the evening as smoke and flames emerged from the rooftop. Aneta Gołębiowska, representing the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Katowice, detailed the initial notification received by regional emergency services.
At 20:16, the fire service received information about a fire on the roof of a Biedronka store on Niepodległości Street in Jastrzębie-Zdrój.
The complete evacuation of the building prior to the arrival of rescue crews allowed firefighters to focus immediately on exterior operations and roof containment.
Regional firefighting response
To contain the fire across the 500-square-meter rooftop, regional commanders mobilized extensive emergency reinforcements from several municipal fire commands. More than 20 fire service units were directed to the site on Niepodległości street to participate in the operation. Regional dispatchers deployed specialized firefighting platoons from Bielsko-Biała, Rybnik, Wodzisław Śląski, and Żory to support local firefighters in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. Crews worked directly to control the burning photovoltaic panels and prevent the flames from penetrating further into the interior of the store. The Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Katowice indicated that the containment and extinguishing effort would continue for many hours.

Traffic closures and investigation
Police officers established an emergency perimeter around the Biedronka store to protect the public and facilitate unimpeded access for fire engines. Authorities instituted a complete shutdown of traffic along Niepodległości street in both directions in the vicinity of the burning building. The road closure caused substantial travel disruptions across the Bzie district as drivers were forced to seek alternate routes on Wednesday night. Emergency personnel remained on site to manage containment procedures and secure the surrounding perimeter. Authorities stated that neither the specific cause of the fire nor the financial scale of the material losses could be determined while active firefighting remained underway. Official determinations regarding the circumstances will follow once the emergency services conclude their on-site operations.
