US strikes Qeshm and puts Fordow in range

Continues from this morning. New: US officials confirmed limited Qeshm strikes, while Donald Trump said Fordow could be hit.

US officials confirmed that Washington carried out limited strikes on Qeshm island late on Monday, after Iranian state media reported five consecutive explosions and residents described aircraft overhead. Officials told American outlets the operation answered Iranian surface-to-air missiles fired at US assets, while others said it did not mark a return to large-scale hostilities. The Pentagon referred questions to US Central Command, which had not issued a public account of the strikes.

Donald Trump widened the threat in a Fox News interview, saying the United States might have to strike Fordow, the underground uranium-enrichment site he called Iran's most protected nuclear facility. JD Vance, by contrast, said he and Donald Trump were optimistic about a negotiated settlement, and Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, told IRNA that intensive indirect talks with Washington were under way.

“The president and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement”

JD Vance

Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed it had destroyed a US MQ-9 Reaper drone and added further drone claims through Tasnim, but local Iranian authorities gave no public account of the blasts. Qeshm hosts an underground missile site, a naval base and a major desalination plant at the mouth of the strait, which Iran has kept closed since the war began in late February. Oil prices fell more than 7% on 2 November as traders bet on diplomacy, even as the Pentagon prepared options for expanding strikes.

Russian bombs hit Zaporizhzhia aid centre

Continues from this morning. New: The reported toll rose to 29 dead, five injured and 48 missing as rescue work continued.

Russian aerial bombs hit an aid distribution point and shelter in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, and the latest regional toll rose to 29 dead and five injured. Mykhailo Semikin, the regional head, said 48 people were still missing and that rescue teams continued to search damaged buildings. Earlier Ukrainian counts had been lower, and the region declared a day of mourning for Tuesday, 3 November.

“The scale of the tragedy is terrible. Behind every number there is a human life.”

Mykhailo Semikin

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the first strike hit as people arrived for weekly aid distribution, and a second wave then struck the shelter where people had taken cover. Ukrainian prime minister Serhii Koretskyi accused Moscow of knowing that aid was handed out regularly at the site. Ukrainian authorities said repeated strikes, drones and damaged infrastructure slowed the search.

The attack followed the expiry on 1 November of a local ceasefire in Kherson region that had allowed humanitarian work around Russian-occupied Oleshky. Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's envoy, said Russia and Ukraine were expected to hold working talks in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November with American mediation. Moscow's defence ministry separately said it had launched a massive strike on Ukrainian energy facilities and port infrastructure, while Poland activated air defences near its border.

Hackers warm supermarket freezers across Europe

Continues from this morning. New: Italy now reports 20 affected supermarkets in Sicily alone, far above the earlier count.

Hackers tampered with refrigeration systems in supermarkets across Europe, raising freezer and fridge temperatures and forcing stores to discard food. In Silvi Marina, in Italy's Abruzzo region, attackers set control software to 150 degrees at about 3am, while actual temperatures climbed to 40 degrees before technicians arrived. In Sassari, hackers raised refrigerated counters to about 15 degrees, and Sicily later reported 20 affected supermarkets in Catania, Ragusa and Palermo.

“It is clear there is a problem, and they have shown us that we are vulnerable, that they can attack us in any way and at any moment.”

Daniele Erasmi

Italy's government called the domestic impact limited, saying only a few of thousands of commercial units had been hit and that no health risk from thawing had emerged. Palazzo Chigi pointed to outdated security systems, internet-exposed interfaces and weak authentication at affected sites. The National Cybersecurity Agency is passing anomaly reports to the Carabinieri's NAS unit and meeting trade groups and company executives.

Matteo Piantedosi, Italy's interior minister, said he was concerned because the episodes had appeared in several European countries and looked coordinated at European level. Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Ireland also reported attacks or investigations, and no group has claimed responsibility. Consumer groups warned of possible shortages, price rises and health risks, while investigators still had not identified the attackers.

Tenerife mourns Jesús de Miguel after fatal collision

New

Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for CD Tenerife, died on Tuesday morning after a collision during Monday's LaLiga Hypermotion match against Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López. In stoppage time he carried the ball beyond halfway and headed towards goal before Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono struck him with a knee. Owono received a direct red card, while medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the pitch after De Miguel lost consciousness and convulsed.

Tenerife said De Miguel regained a pulse and spontaneous breathing before an ambulance took him to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The club later reported that his neurological condition had deteriorated overnight, and Europa Press said he died at 08:00 on 3 November. Police sources said the Policía Nacional's homicide group had opened an investigation and that the case had already reached the courts.

“We are all going through moments of weakness and sadness, unable to believe what has happened, but we will mourn and come together with everyone around us.”

Felipe Miñambres

Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres said psychological support had been offered to players and their partners. The club asked LaLiga to postpone Wednesday's Copa del Rey tie against CD Badajoz and the league match against Granada CF. FC Andorra expressed condolences, and reports said Owono was deeply upset after being targeted with chants calling him a murderer. Tenerife plans to return to action against AD Ceuta on 15 November.

Russia confirms Abu Dhabi talks on Ukraine

New

Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia, the United States and Ukraine will hold talks in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November. The Russian presidential spokesman said Moscow's delegation would take part in a trilateral round mediated by Washington at technical level. Kyiv had not yet endorsed the announcement, but Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's special envoy, had already announced the round and said it would cover de-escalation, humanitarian measures and post-war security arrangements.

Vladimir Medinsky, an adviser to Vladimir Putin, will lead Russia's team, as he did in earlier rounds. Ukraine has accused him of slowing talks, while the United States and Europe had pressed for a more senior Russian figure. A senior American official said Witkoff and Jared Kushner were expected to represent Washington, and Peskov said there were no specific plans yet for Putin to meet the Russian delegation before it leaves.

Friedrich Merz and Volodymyr Zelenskyy used a Berlin meeting to press Europe's claim to a seat in the process. Merz announced €200m in extra winter aid for Ukraine and said European states must be involved because sanctions and future security architecture cannot be settled without them. Zelenskyy listed a ceasefire on energy and critical infrastructure attacks, an end to the Black Sea grain blockade and an all-for-all prisoner exchange as priorities.

“Europe must and wants to play a role in this process.”

Next: The Abu Dhabi talks are scheduled for 10 and 11 November.

Binance blames fake interviews for $6.3bn theft

New

Binance said a $6.3bn crypto theft began with social engineering that used fake job interviews and tainted software. Its report traces one compromise to June, when a wallet-team employee downloaded a tampered AI tool, and a second to September, when a software engineer was asked to download an assignment after two interviews with a supposed project director. On 29 October, attackers used deployment permissions to reach a transaction-signing service and drained hot wallets over nearly four hours.

The FBI has attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit previously linked to the $1.5bn Bybit theft in February. North Korea denied the accusation, and Kim Yo Jong called it a political provocation by the United States. Binance said it had prevented 57 North Korea-linked attacks so far this year, using compromised software packages and fake video-conferencing apps.

Binance says about $2.85bn has been frozen or intercepted with law-enforcement help, and that it set aside more than 100% of the funds needed to cover losses. It said 98% of affected token assets had been replenished by Saturday, 31 October. Withdrawals were suspended globally and reopened on Sunday, 1 November, but the company said that halt alone would not have stopped the attack because hackers exploited a feature that let them move funds independently of its systems.

“We apologize for the concern, disruption and uncertainty it caused our users, partners and the wider industry.”
