Why is Ronaldo giving up the number seven shirt for Portugal?

Across twenty-three years he played two hundred thirty-four matches and scored 146 goals, a national record.

The break followed a row with new coach Jorge Jesus, who had only just taken over. In Oslo, Ronaldo did not play a minute of Portugal's win. El País reports he accused Jesus of lying. Reports from RTP and A Bola say the federation president then travelled to Copenhagen to meet Jesus, and that Ronaldo left camp early, without permission.

Weeks after the row, announcing his exit in a video, he said: Not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not taken only with the head, they are also taken with the heart. Now he hands back the number seven shirt.
