Houthis squeeze oil routes as officials confront AI misuse, border failures and inflation

The day’s hardest news ran through chokepoints, both physical and institutional. Houthi gains near Bab el-Mandeb and strikes on Saudi infrastructure jolted oil markets, while documents in Spain and disclosures from Anthropic showed officials learning, again, that warnings age badly when ignored.

Volodymyr Zelensky offers to meet Vladimir Putin at December G20 summit in Miami

The Ukrainian leader said he would attend the Florida gathering if Donald Trump invites him and Vladimir Putin attends, as US envoys push for resumed peace talks.

Proposal for direct talks in Florida

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he is prepared to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in person at the G20 leaders summit in Miami. Speaking to Deutsche Welle reporter Misha Komadovsky at CFB North Bay military air base in Canada, Zelensky confirmed his willingness to attend the summit if both leaders receive invitations and Putin travels to Florida. The two leaders have not met face to face since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Putin has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019. The summit is scheduled for 14–15 December 2026 at Trump National Doral Miami under the hosting of US President Donald Trump. While Russia is a G20 member, Ukraine is not and would require a guest invitation from the United States to participate.

Yes, of course. We must go. We must meet, talk and make decisions.

— Volodymyr Zelensky

It is not a matter of words. What I will tell him or what he wants to tell me does not matter. Results matter. That is all.

— Volodymyr Zelensky

Mediation efforts and diplomatic schedule

Zelensky's proposal follows recent mediation efforts led by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who traveled to Moscow to meet Putin and to Kyiv to meet Zelensky. While those talks yielded no breakthrough on core disputes, Zelensky noted that the envoys presented constructive proposals. Donald Trump stated on 9 September 2026 that Putin seeks a war-ending settlement and that an agreement remains possible if Ukraine agrees. Zelensky previously indicated that trilateral discussions between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States could take place in September 2026, pointing to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, or Switzerland as potential hosts. Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador Marat Berdyev announced that a Russian delegation covering energy, foreign affairs, and natural resources will attend a G20 energy ministerial in Houston from 14 to 16 September 2026.

Air defense requests and winter requirements

Alongside diplomatic outreach, Zelensky detailed Ukraine's military requirements ahead of winter, focusing on countering Russian ballistic missile strikes. He stated that Russia currently manufactures 140 ballistic missiles per month, which requires 280 interceptors under standard NATO two-to-one defense doctrine. Zelensky requested 100 to 120 Patriot interceptors monthly from Western allies to protect civilian and energy infrastructure during the colder months. He acknowledged that US Patriot production capacity is constrained, suggesting that additional deliveries would need to draw from existing inventories. Ukraine has also established agreements with several European companies to develop a domestic anti-missile system known as Freya, with the first test phase planned by late December 2026.

Sustained strikes on logistical and industrial sites

The diplomatic positioning coincides with continued mutual strikes across the front lines and against strategic infrastructure. Over the past two weeks, Russian forces have deployed faster jet-propelled drones against Kyiv, pausing attacks only during the visit by US negotiators. An overnight Russian missile strike on an industrial facility in Kryvyi Rih left one person dead and two injured, while an additional drone strike killed one person in Zaporizhzhia, and airstrikes caused explosions in Odesa. Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted Russian industrial infrastructure, striking a chemical facility in Tolyatti and sparking fires near an airfield and an automotive plant in Taganrog. Both militaries continue to target logistical and economic infrastructure as frontline positions remain in a deadlock after more than four and a half years of war.
