US proposes trilateral talks with Ukraine and Russia by late October, Zelensky says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on 4 October 2026 that the United States is coordinating technical-level trilateral discussions with Ukraine and Russia scheduled before the end of October.
Washington proposes technical talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday, 4 October 2026, that the United States plans to organize a new round of trilateral talks with Ukrainian and Russian representatives before the end of October. Speaking to journalists at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky stated that American officials are in active contact with both Kyiv and Moscow to prepare the discussions. The proposed meetings are intended to take place at a technical level rather than as a political summit between heads of state. The initiative is aimed at establishing a framework to end the armed conflict, which has continued for four and a half years. Zelensky explained that the American side is currently coordinating with both parties to determine how the three-way format will be arranged.
The American side is currently in contact with Ukraine and Russia and proposes to organize a meeting at the technical level in a trilateral format by the end of October.
American envoys and consultations
The American mediation proposal follows an increase in diplomatic exchanges between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv throughout recent weeks. In September 2026, United States envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Ukraine for their first official visit to hold direct discussions with Zelensky. Following those September consultations with the two American representatives, Zelensky remarked that the conflict appeared likely to continue into the upcoming winter season. Despite that forecast, the Ukrainian president expressed optimism about maintaining direct channels with Washington and other partners, stating that ongoing dialogue remains essential to making progress toward a peaceful outcome.
I believe that each of these fundamental meetings brings us closer to peace.

German Chancellor visits Kyiv
The announcement of the United States diplomatic track coincided with an official visit to Kyiv by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday, 4 October 2026. Zelensky hosted Merz in the Ukrainian capital for bilateral discussions regarding ongoing European assistance during the wartime period. During the meeting, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to Ukraine and delivered a new pledge of financial aid to support the Ukrainian government. The arrival of the German Chancellor served to renew economic and political cooperation between Berlin and Kyiv at a time when Ukraine is coordinating with international partners on multiple diplomatic and security fronts.
Strikes target Dnieper bridges
The diplomatic discussions in Kyiv took place as the Ukrainian capital faced a fresh resurgence of Russian aerial attacks against urban infrastructure. Over recent days, Russian forces launched targeted strikes against transit infrastructure using jet-powered drones. Ukrainian defense officials reported that these jet-powered aerial systems present significant interception difficulties for air defense crews compared with standard drone models. The strikes hit two of the eight bridges that span the Dnieper River in Kyiv, causing extensive traffic jams throughout the city and disrupting transport across the river. The damage to the river crossings disrupted daily transit across the capital as the conflict reached four and a half years.
