Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Saturday that he is prepared to travel to Miami in December to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Group of 20 leaders summit. Speaking in an interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle on 12 September 2026, Zelensky affirmed his readiness to attend if the Russian leader is also present at the gathering in Florida. The Ukrainian president framed the potential summit encounter as an opportunity to negotiate a definitive conclusion to the war rather than engaging in symbolic dialogue. He stressed that direct contact between heads of state must focus strictly on reaching actionable agreements.

Ukrainian assessment of battlefield leverage

Zelensky argued during the interview that Kyiv approaches potential negotiations from a solid bargaining position. He based this assessment on the current balance on the front lines, pointing to modest territorial gains by Russian forces when measured against their high personnel casualties. German broadcaster Deutsche Welle estimates that Russian military fatalities reach up to 30,000 soldiers per month in the conflict. Zelensky noted that procedural rhetoric and prepared talking points would carry no weight during any direct interaction with the Russian president.

Diplomatic precedent between Kyiv and Moscow

A bilateral meeting in Miami would represent the first direct encounter between Zelensky and Putin since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The two leaders have met in person only once in their political careers, on 9 December 2019 in Paris during a Normandy format summit focused on the conflict in the Donbas region. That four-party session included former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. Putin has not attended a G20 leaders summit in person since 2019, and the Kremlin has not officially confirmed whether the Russian president will travel to the United States for the December event.

Russian engagement with United States host platforms

Zelensky's readiness declaration follows recent instances of Russian participation in G20 ministerial tracks held within the United States. In August 2026, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov attended a G20 ministerial conference in Asheville, North Carolina, at the invitation of United States authorities. That attendance provoked objections from European delegations at the summit. United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the invitation, stating that maintaining an active dialogue with Moscow was essential to pursuing an end to the war against Ukraine.

Diplomatic coordination is set to continue ahead of the December leaders meeting. On Saturday, Marat Berdyev, the Russian Foreign Ministry special representative for the G20, announced on Telegram that Russian officials will participate in the G20 energy ministers meeting scheduled for 14–16 September 2026 in Houston, Texas. The Russian delegation in Houston will include representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
