Dawit Seare edges Jakob Ingebrigtsen as Agathe Guillemot takes mile gold in Copenhagen

Men's 5km title race

Eritrea's Dawit Seare claimed the men's 5km title at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The 21-year-old African champion clocked a national record time of 12:56, holding off a late challenge from Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen. France's Flavien Szot led the early pace before Ethiopia's Mezgebu Sime attacked with approximately one kilometre remaining. Ingebrigtsen, competing in his sixth race of an injury-disrupted season, closed the gap and overtook Seare with 200 metres left before fading in the final 100 metres. Ingebrigtsen took the silver medal in a Norwegian national record of 12:59, while Eritrea's Saymon Amanuel took bronze in a personal best of 13:00. Ireland's Darragh McElhinney finished 16th in 13:22, breaking Alistair Cragg's 2012 national record by four seconds.

Women's mile and European record

France's Agathe Guillemot won the women's road mile, completing the distance in 4:22.74 to establish a European record and the fastest time in the world this year. The 27-year-old followed race leader Freweyni Hailu before launching her decisive sprint in the closing stages. Hailu took silver in a season's best of 4:24.35, while Kenya's Mirriam Cherop secured bronze in 4:25.71. Denmark's Annemarie Nissen placed fourth in a personal best of 4:26.78. The victory followed fourth-place finishes for Guillemot at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun in March and the European Championships in Birmingham in August. Guillemot described her approach to the race afterwards.

“That was really how I wanted to run, by being an actor. For it to be me dictating terms.”

Men's mile and women's 5km results

In the men's road mile, Germany's Robert Farken caught long-time leader Yared Nuguse to take gold in a world-leading time of 3:51.80. Nuguse, representing the United States, finished second in a season's best of 3:52.33, while Ruben Querinjean took bronze in a national record time of 3:52.77. Ireland's Cathal Doyle finished 17th in the mile in 3:58.40, and Andrew Coscoran placed 40th in 4:07.95. The women's 5km title went to Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw, who pulled away from the pack to finish in a season's best of 14:41. Caroline Makandi Gitonga of Kenya finished seven seconds behind for silver, and Australia's Rose Davies took bronze in an area record time of 14:50. Britain's Hannah Nuttall finished 10th with a personal best of 15:08.

Event context and calendar

The Copenhagen event marked the second edition of the World Athletics Road Running Championships following the inaugural competition held in Riga in 2023. A planned 2025 edition in San Diego was cancelled due to logistical and budgetary constraints. Several middle-distance medalists did not participate in Denmark after contesting the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest the previous week. Podium finishers from Budapest, including Klaudia Kazimierska, Georgia Hunter Bell, and Nikki Hiltz, were absent from the starting lists in Copenhagen. Ireland's Sarah Healy finished 13th in the women's mile in 4:32.98, while Laura Nicholson placed 21st in 4:36.64. For European indoor 1,500m champion Guillemot, the race served as her final competitive outing of the summer season.
