Iran and New Zealand play out 2-2 draw in World Cup Group 7 opener
Iran and New Zealand traded goals in a high‑tempo Group 7 opener at the 2026 World Cup, with Elijah Just scoring twice for the Kiwis before Iranian replies from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebi forced a 2‑2 draw in Los Angeles.
Fast start for New Zealand
New Zealand made a clear statement from kick-off in Los Angeles, pressing high and moving the ball quickly. The approach paid off inside seven minutes when Elijah Just finished a flowing move to give the Kiwis a shock lead. Iran struggled to settle early, but the goal seemed to wake them.
Iranian response and Taremi’s near miss
Iran gradually took control, with Mehdi Taremi dropping deep and linking play. The Olympiacos forward nearly levelled in the 23rd minute, driving a powerful shot from distance that rattled the left post. Iran continued to probe and was finally rewarded just after the half‑hour when Ramin Rezaeian pounced on a loose ball in the box and slotted home the equaliser.
Just strikes again after the break
New Zealand started the second half as they did the first, exploiting space on the counter. In the 54th minute, Chris Wood released Just with a perfectly weighted pass, and the forward fired low into the net for his second of the evening. Once more, Iran had to chase the game.
Iran hit back to share the points
The Persian Stars responded again, raising their intensity. Ten minutes after falling behind, they drew level. A diagonal ball by Saman Ghoddos was crossed from the right by Rezaeian, and Mohammad Mohebi rose highest to plant a header in off the post. Chances continued at both ends as fatigue set in, but neither side could find a winner.
Group 7 wide open
The draw leaves both Iran and New Zealand on one point, alongside Belgium and Egypt who also drew their opening encounter. Every team in Group 7 is level, setting up a finely balanced contest for the remaining matches.
