Beach Buggy engulfed in flames triggers wildfire in Marathia, Zakynthos

Outbreak and cause

A wildfire broke out on the morning of 11 August in Marathia, a hard-to-reach forested area on the island of Zakynthos. According to ERT, the fire was triggered by a four-wheeled Beach Buggy vehicle that became engulfed in flames under circumstances that remain unclear at this stage. The driver and his son, who was riding as a passenger, managed to abandon the vehicle in time and escaped without injury. The report described their escape as miraculous. The Beach Buggy, described as a four-wheeled motorcycle-type vehicle, was completely consumed by the flames, which then spread to the surrounding forested area.

Spread and containment

Strong winds blowing in the area caused the fire to spread quickly through the difficult terrain. Firefighting forces succeeded in bringing the blaze under control. By the time of the second report, the fire had been contained, meaning its boundaries had been established and it was no longer actively spreading. The rapid spread was attributed to the strong winds, which fanned the flames through the hard-to-reach forest. The response involved both ground and aerial units deployed to the area in a coordinated effort to contain the blaze.

Resources deployed

The firefighting operation mobilized substantial forces to tackle the blaze. On the ground, 22 firefighters and 8 vehicles were deployed, along with 1 foot patrol from the 17th EMAK (ΕΜΟΔΕ). Volunteers and water trucks provided by the Municipality and the Regional Authority of Zakynthos also joined the effort. From the air, 2 aircraft and 1 helicopter operated over the area. The combination of ground crews, aerial support, and local municipal and regional resources reflected the scale of the response to the wildfire in the difficult-to-access terrain.

Emergency alerts and investigation

Due to the fire, an emergency 112 alert was activated to inform people in the wider Marathia area. The alert called on citizens present in the area to be on standby. The area had been classified as high fire risk (category 3) for the day, indicating elevated danger of wildfire ignition and spread. To investigate the causes of the fire, the Arson Crime Investigation Team from Corfu was mobilized and dispatched to the scene. The team specializes in investigating arson crimes and will examine the circumstances under which the Beach Buggy caught fire.
