A wildfire broke out in low vegetation and an agricultural area near Andrianou street in Koropi, in the eastern part of the Attica region of Greece, on Sunday afternoon, 9 August 2026. An alarm was sounded at the Fire Service as the blaze erupted in low vegetation in the Koropi area. The fire started shortly before 3:00 PM, according to one report, while the Fire Service's operations center was notified of the incident at approximately 16:00 on the same day. The Koropi area was classified at very high risk of fire ignition on 9 August, placed in category 4 of Greece's fire danger classification system.
Emergency alert to residents
Shortly after 16:00, Greece's 112 emergency alert system was activated, calling residents of the affected area to readiness. The message was sent to inhabitants of the Koropi area as the firefighting operation was already underway, with both ground crews and aerial assets engaged at the scene. The 112 alert went out shortly after the Fire Service's operations center had been notified of the blaze at approximately 16:00. The activation came on a day when the region was already under a category 4 very high fire risk designation.

Firefighting response
The Fire Service mounted an immediate response to the blaze, deploying both ground and aerial assets to the scene in Koropi. A total of 47 firefighters were dispatched, organized with three foot patrol teams drawn from the 1st EMODE and 1st EMAK units. Between 10 and 11 vehicles were sent to the fire, depending on the report. From the air, 4 aircraft and 2 helicopters were mobilized to conduct water drops, bringing the total number of aerial means to six. The Municipality of Kropia contributed to the operation by sending water tankers to support the firefighting effort on the ground, supplementing the Fire Service's own resources.

Arson investigation
To investigate the causes of the fire, the Investigative Team for Arson Crime Response of Eastern Attica was mobilized and dispatched to the scene. The team, designated for investigating arson crimes in the Eastern Attica area, was tasked with determining the origin and cause of the blaze in the Koropi area. The firefighting operation was ongoing at the time of reporting, with aerial and ground crews continuing to work on containing the fire in the agricultural area near Andrianou street.
