Audrey Werro wins Budapest 800m in 1:55.88 to close outdoor season unbeaten

Werro secures 800-meter victory

Swiss middle-distance runner Audrey Werro concluded her competitive season on 12 September 2026 by winning the 800 meters at the inaugural Ultimate Championship in Budapest. The 22-year-old athlete from CA Belfaux clocked a winning time of 1:55.88, representing the eighth-fastest performance of her career. The victory earned her $150,000 in prize money and preserved an unbeaten outdoor record throughout 2026. Her outdoor sequence follows gold at the European Championships in Birmingham as well as consecutive Diamond League wins in Lausanne, Zurich, and Brussels. Her only defeat in a final this year occurred in March during the World Athletics Indoor Championships. Speaking to Swiss television broadcaster SRF after the race, Werro reflected on her tactical approach and season outcome.

I was able to experience a wonderful season. I had great fun today too, even if the race was tactical to some extent. But at the same time it was easy for me, I just ran away from the front.

Hodgkinson and competitors in pursuit

Werro took control of the pace from the start after a relatively slow opening 400-meter lap. She held the inside line along the curb and prevented late charges from her nearest rivals in the home straight. Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson took second place in 1:56.26. The British runner had rested ahead of the Budapest meeting, choosing to skip Diamond League events in Lausanne, Zurich, and Brussels after feeling unready to race. Femke Broeders-Bol finished third in 1:56.74, unable to close the gap on the final bend. Valentina Rosamilia of Switzerland crossed the line in fifth position with a time of 1:58.53. Fellow Swiss athlete Veronica Vancardo did not start the final, having withdrawn following a fall in the semi-final where she collided with Italian competitor Eloisa Coiro before being advanced to the final on appeal.

Moser reaches pole vault podium

In the women's pole vault, Swiss European champion Angelica Moser took third place with a height of 4.85 meters. The result matched her season best, which she had previously achieved two and a half weeks earlier at Zurich main station during the Weltklasse Zurich exhibition. Moser cleared 4.85 meters on her third career occasion before failing three attempts at 4.90 meters, a mark that would have improved her national record of 4.88 meters established in Monaco two years earlier. The podium finish in Hungary extended her 2026 podium record, having placed in the top three across all seven of her Diamond League appearances this year. United States vaulter Sandi Morris took the win over compatriot Hana Moll on countback after both cleared 4.90 meters, with Morris clearing the height in one fewer attempt.

Field event results in long jump

The men's long jump competition produced another Swiss podium finish in Budapest. Simon Ehammer of Appenzell secured third place with a best jump of 8.07 meters. Reigning Olympic and European champion Miltiadis Tentoglou won the event with a distance of 8.35 meters. Bulgarian athlete Bozhidar Saraboyukov finished in second position with an 8.34-meter leap, finishing one centimeter behind Tentoglou. Ehammer's top-three result closed out the competition program for the Swiss delegation at the season finale in the Hungarian capital.
