Demi Vollering wins European road title in Slovenia one week after world championship
The Dutch cyclist attacked 14 kilometres from the finish on the Mozjanca climb to win the 130-kilometre road race in Ljubljana ahead of teammate Puck Pieterse.
Solo attack on the Mozjanca
Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering won the women's road race at the European cycling championships in Slovenia on Saturday, 3 October 2026, securing her second consecutive continental title. The 29-year-old FDJ-Suez rider attacked on the Mozjanca climb with between 14 and 15 kilometres remaining in the 130-kilometre event. The Mozjanca ascent, measuring 2.1 kilometres in length with an average gradient of 10.4%, served as the central tactical battleground in the race's finale. Vollering accelerated directly past Polish competitor Kasia Niewiadoma on the steepest section of the road and maintained her gap on the descent and run-in into Ljubljana. She rode solo across the finish line to claim the gold medal in her first competitive outing wearing the rainbow jersey of world champion.
Dutch team execution
The Dutch national squad orchestrated the race tempo to create the opening for Vollering's decisive solo move. The opening 90 kilometres of the 130-kilometre route were relatively flat, keeping the peloton largely together before the selective climbing circuit began. The Dutch squad lifted the pace during the first ascent of the Mozjanca, reducing the peloton to a select group of roughly 20 riders. On the second and final ascent of the Mozjanca, Dutch teammates Femke de Vries and Puck Pieterse accelerated hard at the front of the reduced group, exhausting competitors including French rider Juliette Berthet, who rides alongside Vollering at FDJ-Suez. Pieterse provided the final lead-out before Vollering attacked. Pieterse maintained her own pace to finish in second place, six seconds behind Vollering, while Swiss rider Marlen Reusser crossed the line in third place to secure the bronze medal.

Double championship in one season
Saturday's victory in Slovenia was Vollering's 16th win of the 2026 cycling season, adding to a campaign that includes stage race and classic victories across Europe and North America. Just one week prior, Vollering claimed her first world road championship title in Montreal, Canada. By winning in Ljubljana, she became the first female cyclist to win both the world road race title and the European road race title in the same calendar year. Her 2026 campaign also includes overall victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, as well as wins at the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. While her solo move at the world championships in Montreal saw her temporarily caught before winning, her attack in Slovenia stayed clear to the line.
Dutch dominance at the European championships
Vollering's victory gave the Netherlands its tenth gold medal in the eleven editions of the women's elite European road race championship. Dutch riders entered the race having won nine of the previous ten editions. Vollering previously captured the European title during the championship held in the Ardeche region of France, and her win in Slovenia makes her the first rider in the history of the event to successfully defend her title in back-to-back editions. Lorena Wiebes is the only other rider to have won the European road title twice, taking victories in 2022 and 2024. Vollering took time to celebrate as she crossed the line in Ljubljana, completing a Dutch one-two finish on the podium alongside Pieterse.
