Mathieu van der Poel wins Tour de Luxembourg stage five with 175-kilometre solo break
Mathieu van der Poel attacked from the opening kilometres of stage five between Mersch and Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, riding solo for 175 kilometres to take the victory as Davide Piganzoli secured the overall general classification title.
Solo attack from the start
Mathieu van der Poel attacked shortly after the start of the fifth and final stage of the 86th Tour de Luxembourg, embarking on a solo ride across 175 kilometres of the 177-kilometre route from Mersch to Luxembourg-Limpertsberg. The stage presented a difficult course featuring 2,886 metres of total vertical elevation gain. Van der Poel, riding for Alpecin, broke away from the peloton right after the official start and was never caught by the chasing riders. A group of six riders formed behind him and spent considerable time attempting to bridge the gap. The main peloton eventually absorbed that six-man chase group as the race entered its concluding phases.
Final chase and stage results
With 40 kilometres remaining until the finish line, the main peloton still trailed Van der Poel by 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Danish rider Mikkel Honoré of EF Education-EasyPost attacked from the peloton with 20 kilometres to go to mount a late pursuit, but he could not eliminate the deficit. Van der Poel crossed the finish line in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg alone, holding an advantage of 1 minute and 4 seconds over Honoré. Pepijn Reinderink of Soudal Quick-Step secured third place on the stage, finishing 1 minute and 9 seconds behind the winner. Italian rider Davide Piganzoli crossed the line in fourth position to wrap up the stage behind the podium trio.

Piganzoli secures general classification
Davide Piganzoli of Visma-Lease a Bike successfully defended his overall race lead to win the general classification of the 86th edition of the Tour de Luxembourg. Piganzoli did not need to chase down Van der Poel's breakaway to preserve his advantage at the top of the standings. Piganzoli established his position after winning the 20-kilometre individual time trial on Saturday during stage four. In the final general classification, French rider Mattéo Vercher took second place, 52 seconds behind Piganzoli. Vercher's teammate Thomas Gachignard completed the overall podium in third position, 54 seconds behind the winner. The triumph is Piganzoli's second general classification title of the season after his victory at La Route d'Occitanie in June. Piganzoli succeeds American rider Brandon McNulty, who won the Luxembourg race last year ahead of Denmark's Mattias Skjelmose and Ecuador's Richard Carapaz.

Five days of competition and upcoming worlds
Dutch riders took stage victories on four of the five days of racing in Luxembourg. Van der Poel won the opening stage on Wednesday, Marijn van den Berg took stage two on Thursday, and Pepijn Reinderink claimed stage three on Friday. Piganzoli was the only non-Dutch stage winner of the week when he took Saturday's time trial before Van der Poel closed the event with his second stage win on Sunday. The stage performance comes one week prior to the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada, scheduled for Sunday, 27 September 2026. Van der Poel, who won the world road race title in Glasgow in 2023, is scheduled to compete in Montreal in a field featuring rivals including Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert.
