US and Iran sign agreement to end war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz after G7 summit
Presidents Trump and Pezeshkian signed a preliminary memorandum on Wednesday ending military operations, lifting the US naval blockade, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 60-day framework sets the stage for a final peace treaty.
The signing
President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian finalized the memorandum on Wednesday after weeks of preparation. Trump signed the document during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife at the Palace of Versailles, following the G7 summit in Evian. Pezeshkian added his signature electronically from Tehran. The agreement entered into force immediately, without a formal ceremony, and was confirmed by a White House official to AFP and by Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei via state media.
The text has been finalized and the agreement has officially entered into force.
Immediate ceasefire and Strait of Hormuz opening
The memorandum orders an immediate and permanent end to all military operations, including those in Lebanon. The US naval blockade on Iranian ports is to be lifted, with a return to full commercial shipping within 30 days. The Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for roughly a fifth of the world's oil, reopened for traffic on Wednesday. Passage is free for the next 60 days, after which Iran is to negotiate future fees with Oman.
The main topic of conversation was the fact that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons and the Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately!
Framework for a final peace deal
A final agreement is to be negotiated within 60 days. During this window, the US Treasury will issue exceptions for Iranian crude oil and petroleum product exports. All sanctions against Iran will be lifted on a schedule to be detailed in the final deal, and frozen Iranian assets will be released. Iran, in turn, reaffirmed its renunciation of nuclear weapons. The memorandum explicitly sets higher costs for any violation because both presidents have signed, Baghaei noted.
- Memorandum of Understanding signed; ceasefire begins; Strait of Hormuz opens for fee-free passage.
- Deadline for US to restore full commercial shipping capacity (30 days after signing).
- Deadline for final peace agreement negotiations (60 days after signing).
Path to a comprehensive treaty
The blockade will ease in proportion to the resumption of commercial shipping through Hormuz. Thirty days after a final pact is reached, US troops are to withdraw from surrounding areas. The preliminary deal's signing hours before a planned Friday ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland, reflects the urgency of restoring energy trade flows. Trump, posting on Truth Social, called the G7 trip 'a complete success' and stressed that the core achievement was keeping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons while reopening the strait.
