US and China extend tariff truce to January 2027 and establish superintelligence dialogue

Bilateral talks and diplomatic calendar

Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day state visit to Washington on 25 September 2026, meeting with US President Donald Trump for extensive discussions. The leaders agreed to meet twice more before the end of the year, first at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in mid-November in Shenzhen, China, and subsequently at the G20 summit in December at Trump National Doral Miami in Florida. Xi formally extended an invitation for the upcoming meeting in Shenzhen.

It will be a pleasure to welcome the President and the First Lady for a visit to China.

During the visit, Trump presented Xi with a copy of the Declaration of Independence in the Oval Office and accompanied him to the National Archives, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. Demonstrators gathered outside the White House on Thursday, calling for religious autonomy and political freedoms in Tibet, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang, while demanding that Beijing refrain from aggression toward Taiwan.

Superintelligence dialogue and tech dinner

The summit addressed technological competition and artificial intelligence governance between the two powers. Both administrations agreed to establish the US-China Dialogue on Superintelligence, scheduling its next formal session for November 2026 alongside a bilateral communication channel for technology-related incidents. The terminology aligns with Trump's address at the United Nations General Assembly, where he advocated replacing the term artificial intelligence with superintelligence. On Thursday evening, the White House hosted a state dinner attended by senior technology leaders, including Elon Musk of xAI, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Michael Dell of Dell Technologies, while Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei was absent.

We will see each other again in November, in China, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, and then at the G20, in December, in Miami, Florida. Many things were accomplished and many more will still be.

Trade agreements and coal commitments

Economic negotiations yielded an extension of the bilateral tariff truce through 10 January 2027. Both nations activated the US-China Trade Council and the US-China Investment Council, two working groups initially established during Trump's visit to Beijing in May 2026. Under the agreed commercial framework, China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of US coal in 2027 and an equal volume in 2028. The governments also reached consensus on recommendations to apply favorable tariff treatment to $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods in each direction. That measure covers US exports including agricultural goods, timber, and cosmetics, alongside Chinese exports such as household appliances and toys. Both sides committed to continuing working discussions on US concerns regarding Chinese export volumes of rare earths and critical minerals.

Military communication and regional conflicts

Security outcomes included an agreement on a memorandum of understanding to strengthen military communication for crisis prevention, scheduled for formal signature as soon as possible. The two armed forces also agreed to maintain cooperation on searching for the remains of US military personnel in China. During bilateral talks, the leaders reviewed the conflict involving Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Xi urged Washington and Tehran to resolve their disputes through swift negotiations, while Trump stated that the maritime situation would resolve favorably following their discussions.
