Ten arrested after violent unrest and fence breach at Kleidi migrant facility in Serres
Greek police deployed riot units from Thessaloniki to the Kleidi Sintiki facility late on 22 August 2026 after clashes destroyed a residential wing and prompted an exterior fence breach.
Outbreak of clashes at Kleidi facility
Shortly after 21:00 on Saturday, 22 August 2026, severe unrest erupted at the closed migrant accommodation center located in Kleidi Sintiki, within the Serres regional unit of northern Greece. A group of residents dismantled a section of the internal security fence and launched stones and other solid objects at guarding Hellenic Police personnel. The violent confrontation created volatile and dangerous conditions that persisted across the compound for more than three hours. Emergency response teams mobilized quickly, deploying local police contingents alongside an ambulance from the National Emergency Center (EKAB) and a municipal fire department vehicle. To reinforce the local forces and regain control of the facility grounds, police commanders ordered a specialized MAT riot police platoon to travel from Thessaloniki to the site.
- Residents breach the inner fence and clash with police officers
- Exterior fence is breached and MAT riot police arrive from Thessaloniki
- Tensions subside as ten individuals are detained and three hospitalized
- Police launch a headcount and perimeter search operation
Structural destruction across the compound
The unrest resulted in extensive physical destruction across multiple sectors of the accommodation center. Participating individuals vandalized prefabricated residential cabins, communal spaces, mounted security cameras, and emergency fire hose stations. Stone throwing and physical strikes also caused substantial damage to several official police service vehicles parked within and around the installation. In addition, an entire residential wing of the facility was completely destroyed during the confrontation. Center management had to evacuate all residents housed in that damaged wing and arrange their immediate transfer to alternate living quarters within the compound.
Fence breach and police arrests
During the height of the disturbances, a group of migrants managed to lift and cut open a section of the facility's outer perimeter fence. This breach enabled several people to slip outside the enclosed perimeter of the closed center. Law enforcement teams moved quickly to seal off the opening and prevent further departures while confronting rioters inside. Police forces located and arrested ten people linked to the unrest. Three of the ten arrested individuals had suffered light injuries during the disturbances and were transferred under escort to a nearby hospital for medical examinations and care.
Morning headcount and operational concerns
The situation calmed during the early morning hours of Sunday, 23 August 2026, enabling regular operations to resume in the undamaged areas of the facility. At dawn, police authorities launched an extensive headcount operation to determine the exact number of individuals who succeeded in escaping from the closed center. The surrounding area remains under a strict police cordon as search teams conduct systematic patrols to locate anyone who fled into the surrounding territory. Hellenic Police investigators continue to examine the specific circumstances and causes that sparked the initial confrontation. Prior to the event, the Serres Police Officers' Association had sent repeated formal letters to political leadership warning of structural vulnerabilities and operational challenges at the Kleidi installation.
