
Truck collision kills two, fire closes D2 near Brno for 12 hours
An early-morning collision between two trucks on the D2 highway near Brno killed both drivers when their vehicles caught fire. The motorway was fully closed for about 12 hours before police reopened one lane in each direction.
Accident sequence
Early Saturday, a Hungarian truck heading toward Brno lost control in a narrowed section of the D2 motorway at the 11-kilometre mark and struck concrete safety barriers. The vehicle skidded and ended up blocking the entire carriageway. An approaching Romanian truck then crashed into the middle of the tractor unit, and both vehicles ignited.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters later recovered the bodies.
Emergency response
Fire services declared a second-degree alarm (out of four) shortly after the collision. Six fire units, including one volunteer crew, fought the blaze with five hose streams and later foam. No hazardous cargo was being transported, according to spokesperson Štěpán Komosný.
Six units, including one volunteer fire brigade, were on site. They extinguished the fire with five water streams and then used foam to finish the job. The trucks were not carrying any dangerous materials.
Closure and diversions
The D2 was shut in both directions from the early morning. Police diverted traffic bound for Břeclav at the Chrlice exit (km 3) and traffic heading to Brno at Blučina (km 11). The closure lasted approximately 12 hours.
After very difficult clearing work following the tragic accident, we managed to partially restore traffic thanks also to a change in traffic organization. It is currently in a 1+1 regime, meaning one lane for each direction. Please pass with maximum caution.
Reopening
Around 4:30 p.m., police announced the partial reopening of the highway in a 1+1 configuration: one lane for each direction. The clearing operation had involved removing the burnt trucks and repairing damaged concrete barriers.
Construction background
The crash occurred close to the reconstruction site of the D1–D2 interchange, where congestion is common even in normal conditions. The narrowed lanes at the reconstruction zone were cited as part of the accident location.
