Prosecutors indict two men over theft of Polish PM Donald Tusk's family Lexus

Prosecutors in northern Poland have concluded their investigation and submitted a formal indictment against two men accused of stealing a Lexus car belonging to the family of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk transferred the case file to the District Court in Elbląg on 18 August 2026. Judicial authorities confirmed the submission on 20 September 2026, following initial reports by TVP Info regarding the court filing. The regional prosecutor's office had refrained from releasing public statements on the case prior to the formal transfer of documents. Mariusz Duszyński, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk, spoke to the Polish Press Agency on Sunday to confirm the legal step.

A trial date has not yet been set.

Theft in Sopot and recovery in Gdańsk

The crime took place in September 2025 in the coastal resort city of Sopot, occurring in the immediate vicinity of Donald Tusk's family residence. The luxury vehicle was taken overnight from outside the home before family members reported the disappearance to local law enforcement. Officers from the regional police department launched a search operation across the Tricity metropolitan area immediately following the report. Police located the stolen Lexus within several hours of the notification, finding the undamaged car in a parking lot situated in the Kokoszki district of Gdańsk. If convicted of the break-in and vehicle theft charges in court, the suspects face statutory prison sentences of up to 10 years under the Polish penal code.

Detailed charges against Łukasz W.

Investigators accumulated extensive evidence against the primary suspect, 40-year-old Łukasz W., resulting in six distinct criminal charges. Prosecutors charged Łukasz W. with acting jointly and in agreement during the burglary and theft of the Lexus from the prime minister's family in Sopot. In addition to that case, prosecutors accused him of carrying out two other separate car thefts involving break-ins in the cities of Elbląg and Sopot. He also faces three criminal charges for using forged vehicle registration plates as genuine documents, which were mounted onto the previously stolen vehicles to conceal their identities. Łukasz W. was apprehended by law enforcement officers at an airport during the investigation and remains in pre-trial detention.

Legal status of co-defendant Stefan N.

The second man named in the indictment is 43-year-old Stefan N., who stands accused of participating directly in the Sopot vehicle theft. Prosecutors allege that Stefan N. operated jointly and in agreement with Łukasz W. to carry out the September 2025 break-in. Stefan N. was initially placed into pre-trial custody during the early stages of the investigation but was subsequently released from detention in February 2026. While Stefan N. remains free pending trial, he continues to face formal prosecution alongside Łukasz W. before the District Court in Elbląg. The court will determine the trial schedule and examine evidence from both defendants once hearing dates are officially scheduled.
