Former England winger Andros Townsend avoided serious injury on Saturday after being struck by a motorised pitch roller during a warmup routine in Thailand. The 35-year-old was participating in passing drills with his PT Prachuap teammates ahead of their Thai League 1 fixture against Pattani. Ground staff drove the heavy maintenance vehicle onto the pitch to level the playing surface, but the operator lost control as Townsend changed direction and stepped backwards out of the drill area to attempt a pass. Townsend did not see the machine approaching from behind. The vehicle knocked the forward over and rolled directly over his legs, trapping his left leg and reaching near his waist and lower torso before the operator jumped off to lift the machinery off him. Teammates halted their exercises immediately as spectators in the stands looked on in shock.

Townsend stood back up following the collision and continued practising with the rest of the squad. PT Prachuap medical personnel evaluated the winger and confirmed that he had avoided serious physical damage, permitting him to take a place on the substitute bench. Townsend entered the match during the final minute of play in the second half, completing a brief appearance as PT Prachuap secured a 3-0 victory over Pattani. The club confirmed after the final whistle that their forward suffered no lasting setbacks from the collision.
