Iris Tió claimed the solo technical title at the Paris 2026 European Aquatics Championships on Tuesday, delivering Spain's first gold of the meet. The Catalan swimmer scored 263.6250 points, finishing 0.2433 points ahead of Belarusian Vasilina Khandoshka, who competes under a neutral flag. Klara Bleyer of Germany took bronze with 258.0400 points. Tió was the fifth of 16 finalists to swim and then waited through the remaining routines, watching Khandoshka's attempt before the final three competitors sealed the result.

The numbers

Khandoshka entered the water with the highest declared difficulty in the field (153.4317 points) and executed powerfully to a Marilyn Manson track. Tió's difficulty card was the eighth highest of the final at 149.4250 points. The margin came from artistic impression, where the Spaniard outscored Khandoshka 114.2000 to 109.9500, a gap of more than four points. In four of the five required technical elements, Tió's marks exceeded the Belarusian's. The one element Khandoshka won, she won by a wide margin, but the artistic differential proved decisive.

The routine

Tió performed to Rosalía's 'Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti', a routine she debuted at the Pontevedra World Cup earlier this year. Wearing a white swimsuit, she drew a standing ovation from the crowd and left head coach Andrea Fuentes in tears. The judges awarded 9.75 across the board for the performance.

Spain's strategy

Spain's approach throughout the championships has been to accept lower difficulty scores and compensate with superior artistic impression. The same formula had already delivered silver to Tió and Lilou Lluís in the free duet, where they posted the highest artistic mark but fell short of gold. This time the arithmetic held. The strategy reflects Fuentes's vision for the sport, prioritising expressiveness, musicality and transitions over raw difficulty.

The week so far

Tio's gold is her fourth individual medal of the championships and Spain's sixth overall. She previously won silver in the mixed free duet and the women's free duet, plus bronze in the solo free on Monday. In that solo free final, Khandoshka took gold and Tió settled for bronze; the solo technical reversed the order. The championships continue through Wednesday, with the acrobatic ballet closing the artistic programme. The Russian neutral team had earlier won the team free routine after adding a last-minute element that raised their difficulty by five points, a move that stirred controversy among the Spanish delegation.
