The incident

At about 7pm on Friday, emergency services were called to Central Park in Chelmsford, Essex, after reports of an attack. A 21-year-old man was found with critical injuries, and despite efforts by paramedics and an air ambulance crew, he died at the scene. Essex Police have not released the victim's name but said his family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

The arrests

An investigation quickly led officers to an address in Auckland Close, Chelmsford, where three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of murder. The suspects, all from Chelmsford, are aged 14, 17 and 18. They remain in custody for questioning. Police have not disclosed any relationship between the suspects and the victim.

Police investigation

Detective Inspector Lydia George described the killing as a "deeply distressing incident" and appealed for witnesses.

This is a deeply distressing incident. A family is grieving and our thoughts remain firmly with them at this incredibly difficult time. I would call on the public and media to please respect their privacy as we continue the early stages of this investigation. We are determined to get them answers and build as clear a picture as possible of the circumstances surrounding what has happened.

She added that detectives are not currently seeking any other suspects and there is no ongoing risk to the public. Police continue to ask anyone who was in the park on Friday evening to come forward, saying "even the smallest detail could prove crucial."

Community response

The attack has already affected local routines. Organisers of Chelmsford Central Parkrun announced that the usual Saturday morning event was cancelled on police advice. The Essex and Herts air ambulance was seen landing in the park on Friday evening.
