17-year-old unaccompanied minor dies after police scooter chase in Toulouse
A 17-year-old unaccompanied foreign minor died in Toulouse on Friday evening after a scooter chase with police that began when officers observed a suspected drug exchange. Two separate investigations have been opened by the local prosecutor's office.
The incident
On Friday 7 August 2026, around 1:00 AM local time (1:15 AM according to the Toulouse prosecutor's office), police officers on avenue de Lombez in central Toulouse, in the Haute-Garonne department, observed what appeared to be a narcotics exchange between a car driver and the rider of a scooter. When officers moved to carry out a traffic check, the scooter rider accelerated abruptly, nearly striking pedestrians standing at a bus shelter as well as a police officer. A pursuit then followed through several streets. The rider ran multiple red lights, drove the wrong way on certain avenues despite the presence of oncoming vehicles, and rode on sidewalks and pedestrian zones where pedestrians were present at the time. The pursuit lasted several minutes before the crash.
The crash and hospitalisation
After the chase, the scooter crashed. Sources differ on the nature of the final impact: Le Parisien, citing a police source, reports the rider struck at least one anti-parking post during his escape. Franceinfo, citing the prosecutor's office, states the scooter collided with the front wing of a police vehicle as the rider exited a pedestrian path he had entered. The 17-year-old suffered thoracic trauma. Police officers at the scene called emergency services, who took charge of the victim upon arrival. He was conscious and complaining of pain, with his vital prognosis not initially considered at risk. He was transported to Purpan hospital for examinations, but his condition worsened overnight. He died from his injuries around 19:00 on Friday evening, after a deterioration in his state of health that occurred during the night. The precise origin of the injuries and their link to the crash remain to be established by investigators.

The victim
The deceased was an unaccompanied foreign minor aged 17 years and 11 months, with no criminal record, according to La Dépêche du Midi. A sum of approximately 1,000 euros was found in his possession at the time of the incident. The prosecutor's office specified that "more than 1,000 euros in cash" was discovered in his bag.
Two investigations
The Toulouse prosecutor's office has opened two separate judicial procedures. The first investigates the causes of death, which must notably determine the precise origin of the injuries that led to the death and their connection to the accident. The second concerns the "aggravated refusal to comply, endangering others, and voluntary violence against persons vested with public authority." Investigators are continuing to exploit CCTV footage to reconstruct the scooter's route, the rider's various manoeuvres, and the exact circumstances of the final impact.
Family response
The victim's family was not informed of the incident until Saturday during the day, according to the family's lawyer, who spoke to ICI Occitanie. The lawyer expressed frustration over the family not being kept informed of the minor's deteriorating condition during his hospitalisation at Purpan.
